I don't, but it costs $40 to activate each "device" and there's a monthly subscription.

I do, and I've had to use it for an emergency. Here's my post from the thread a couple of days ago:

I've been considering getting one of these for back country hikes and bikes... this seems like a decent deal for a dedicated device.

No. Ground team responded and at that location and jurisdiction there were no charges.

There's much debate as to if there are charges or no charges depending on jurisdiction and severity of extraction, so it's kind of a grey unknown depending on where you're at. But in the case of a true life and death emergency of whatever nature, at that time I don't think cost is going to be the biggest factor in the "who is on their way" discussion.

Garmin has their rescue insurance that you can add to the inReach plan, and many hospital / first responder entities have helicopter coverage for a very small price for the entire family. (But that's for the chopper only, not for ground crews). Example in the NW: https://www.lifeflight.org/

I have it and I use it often. I have the Essential plan (the 2nd lowest of 4), and it spits out my location every 10 minutes to a Garmin webpage where people can track my location and even message me. These check-in messages are unlimited. It is far more functional than cellphone satellite SOS since it is for more than emergencies, and it doesn't need to be held at an angle and pointed at the satellite, you can just clip it to something and forget about it and it will keep you in touch as you go. I actually had an Inmarsat phone that I got rid of because I carried this more often. Of course, this doesn't have voice capabilities, but Inmarsat pricing got kind of crazy (on top of being already crazy) the past few years and I rarely used it.

I have one of these for fishing offshore. Really awesome technology and works where iPhone satellite service does not (the iPhone stops working when you get a certain number of miles offshore). I also had two friends who sunk their boat and this really saved their lives. Depending on what you do (remote hiking, boating, etc.), this can be a really important device to have in your bag. Also, great just for casual texting (though slow) if you need to coordinate with friends out in the wilderness or family back home. Now I have a starlink mini that I keep with me, so this has become a backup device, but it is still worth every penny and is far cheaper to operate. Would highly recommend.

Thanks for the info. If you're taking out an InReach subscription it only makes sense to also prepare for the possibility of having to use it in an emergency. I have heard many stories of people being bankrupted by medical air lifts in various scenarios. I'd also be concerned if I had to use it to raise an emergency for some other party - who could be on the hook for the bills in that case?

Who ever that gets rescued. This is just a communicator. It tells Garmin to send help.
Same thing like calling 911 for a house fire you see.

If you call for an ambulance for someone who later claims they didn't want an ambulance, you wouldn't be held accountable?

When you punch the inReach SOS button, the Garmin comm center sends a message to the nearest emergency center to your GPS location. That local emergency center determines who they send for response, and if you're incapacitated, the responders or the emergency center makes the decision whether to send an ambulance or a chopper or both depending on the area involved. Their goal is to choose the fastest and best response possible. Even if you're responsive, when you relay your condition to Garmin comm or the local emergency center prior to the dispatching of the responders, the emergency center most likely will make the call or wait until the responders arrive to assess the situation further. Same thing if you're making the notification for someone other than yourself.

In other words, you won't have much say in who responds as there are civil and legal liabilities and responsibilities for all who are involved in the decision making chain.
