Got one of these a couple weeks ago.

Pros:

- Screen is nice and big for aging eyes
- Plays everything up to PS1 great so far
- Buttons feel pretty good
- Has HDMI video out and Bluetooth if you want to use it as a console
- Good price

Cons

- Available firmware options were mediocre
- Sticks feel like bad Switch
joycons
- fits in a pocket, but it's a stretch to think this would be an EDC

For this chipset (All winner H700), the joysticks are wasted as this can't run anything super reliably beyond PS1, and there's only like 1-2 games that actually require the joysticks. For this chipset you're better off looking for devices that are just D-pad only, like the RG35XXSP, or check out the TrimUI Brick.

where the joysticks make sense is when you get into beefier processors like the Unisoc T618 and T820, both of which can run Dreamcast, N64, and a fair amount of GameCube/PS2.

Do you know how to enable cheats in this device? There's almost no tutorial anywhere online

You can install portmaster and use the joycons a lot tho.

I have been wanting to dip my toes into the retro handheld game. Pulled the trigger on this as it seems like Anbernic is one of the highest rated options out there. Hope it's a good system and thanks for the post!

Why is the TrimUI Brick better?
I'm looking for GBA, SNES and PSP emulation. Would the TRIMUI Brick with only 3.2" screen be too small?
How about those ones (RG36 Max) with a 3.95/4.0" 720x720 screen so the aspect ratio will be correct wether I'm doing GBA or PSP?
Or is TrimUI known for good products and going with the $60-80 TrimUI Smart Pro with the 4.96" 1280x720 going to be the best route?

I'm in research mode for my first retro handheld. I don't want to drop a lot of money the first purchase, since my main focus was to play on the pre-N64/Dreamcast/PSP content. I was thinking the same as you on the screen resolution, but went with the 40XX H.

1) The CubeXX has a 4"/720p (1:1 aspect ratio) screen. This square screen naturally suits GameBoy/Color, Game Gear, NeoGeo Pocket & Pico8. These games fill out the display.
2) The 40XXH has a lower res 4"/480p (4:3) screen. This ratio covers a larger range of content I like to play. Suits well to GBAdvance, PS1 and Sega Genesis type content.
3) A lot of games from systems like NES/SNES/Turbo16 that are 4:3 ratio can be has the ability to be displayed at a 8:7 ratio on the CUBE by chopping off 8pixels on both sides that are supposed to have little content on them. Fills the 4" square screen.
4) This was my push to the 40XXH - when playing 4:3 games on the CUBE, without screen stretching, black bars are present on the top & bottom. The actual playing area is about the equivalent to a 3.5" screen. Comments I heard is that a 4"/4:3 screen is noticeably larger than a 3.5"/4:3.
5) I am keenly aware how my eyes are aging. I went with the 40XXH for a larger 4:3 experience.
6) As I type this out and reviewing over a YT video for notes, I now want a CUBE....or a 40XXH. This is confusing
7) I have future plans on getting a retro double screen. Currently have a $300 Ayn Thor in a basket waiting to be paid for. I'm really wanting to play DS/3DS. I figure that when I buy it, it will fill in the void of whatever I don't buy (CubeXX or 40XXH). I really need to wait for gen 2 double screen systems to work out the kinks for OS and ergonomics.

Hope this helps and doesn't confuse you too much. There is a deep rabbit hole to fall into on what to get. There is some great vids on these 2 handhelds on Retro Game Corps, Joey's Retro Handhelds & TechDweeb. I'm sure there are dozens more.

Great review; thanks. I was watching Joeys handhelds and the cube came up as one of the best in this price range. But you're right; I was probably short sighted purchasing the cube because I would like to play gba games and the square screen wouldn't work as well. Ah well. For the price, can't complain. I still remember my dad buying me the original gameboy and it was 89.99 back in 1989. Here I am debating spending $40 for an infinite library roughly 30 years later lol

I've purchased 4 of these (one for me, 2 more as gifts). 3 of them were good, 1 of them had a defective stick, but Aliexpress was good with the return.

Has a nice screen, buttons and are good, d-pad is very good, feels pretty nice in the hands, and performance is decent for the price. I mostly play my old SNES games on it. My only gripe is the buttons and sticks, and general control layout is kinda small so it's kindof hard to play with for a while with my big ol hands. In the future I'd like to get a PC handheld so I can play games like Skyrim or Halo MCC on the go.

You could always look into remote play from your phone with a controller addon if you have good signal and speed
