The 2024 Mac mini with M4, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD is drawing attention as a compact desktop that feels much smaller than the M1 model while handling migration smoothly. The graphics gains stand out, and the base configuration is being used for everyday work and even video editing without trouble. The main knocks are the tight 256GB storage and, for heavier multitasking, 16GB RAM can feel limiting. Pricing has also been seen lower at Micro Center and Best Buy, with some bundles adding longer warranty coverage.
Common Questions (5)
Yes. Micro Center has been seen at $449 in-store, Best Buy has price-matched Micro Center, Costco has had it at $499 with a 2-year warranty, and AAFES has been mentioned at $469 with no tax for military shoppers.
An M5 Mac mini has not been announced, but the M4 mini is expected to stay discounted until the next model arrives. If you want to avoid timing risk, the current $499 price is already considered a strong buy.
It can be limiting if you store large apps, libraries, or media projects locally. Fast external storage over USB-C 10Gbps or Thunderbolt, or network storage on a LAN, is the practical workaround.
Yes. The coverage window has been reported as 60 days to add AppleCare+, and one unit's purchase date could be adjusted so coverage extended through October 2026.
For many people, yes, including video editing and general use, but heavy multitasking or Parallels can push it into swap. If your workflow is browser-heavy or uses virtual machines and multiple apps, 24GB or 32GB would be safer.

I bought couple of $200 bestbuy gift card from doordash for $360. So effectively the price came down to $410 + taxes.

I'm not talking about storage for documents/etc, but for applications/libraries--any kind of software that's going to use the power/ram on this thing (even 16gb) is gonna take some storage space (I'm thinking graphics software, music editing, video editing/etc)...a usb 2/3 storage drive isn't going to enable the use of all this power. If you're just web-browsing, an M1 will do just fine for many more years I would think.
People complain about what apple charges for storage upgrades, but to get equivalent performance via thunderbolt it's the same or more $ from what I can tell.
or maybe I just really need more application storage than the average power user?
I've been debating picking one of these up as I'm still using a 2019 Intel iMac. What I'm probably going to do is hook the M4 mini up to the iMac, use the iMac screen via screen sharing, and use the iMac for most storage (the iMac is modified and has a 2TB NVME and a 2TB SATA so lots of storage internally).

also, 99% of people are not going to need more than 16gb on this thing. i have edited plenty of huge videos together in premiere on my m1pro with 16gb ram with no issue.
