Seems like a good price, seen this go for around $100 used locally so brand new for $120 is solid. Anyone know how this stacks up against a Yamaha THR10II by any chance sound-quality wise? Planning on picking up a THR10II for $200 but this is intriguing too.

I have this amp and I replaced the tubes with Genalex Gold Lions. What an upgrade! Sweet little amp for the money!

Fantastic amp! I have this and the 15-watt 12". Love them both! I'd contemplate another at this price. Very versatile and great powerful, portable amp that takes to pedals and modelers very well. While commenting, I'll give a shout out to Monoprice overall if you want to consider some of their gear. I have their Celestion cab, 30 and 50-watt tube heads, headphone amp, studio headphones, a few mics, and a few guitars.

I also have other expensive guitars and name brand gear across the spectrum above, so I can compare the Monoprice to standard or upper end name brand gear, not only budget/no name. Just about all the Monoprice stuff I bought holds its own and is a great if not better value than the name brand stuff (even at sale price). If you want to dip your toes in the water and give Monoprice a try, I recommend it.

I'm posting this review because I never took the time to post reviews on Monoprice's site (and I really need to) because I'm genuinely appreciative of the things I've managed to buy from them over the years and especially at the sale prices they have offered. The glory days with tons of sales and opportunities was pre-pandemic. Happy to see some of these amps coming back on sale while gear prices everywhere are climbing.

It's really hard to make that comparison. The Mono sounds like a decent small tube amp with 2 knobs. It is enjoyable, but nothing more. This is a Laney Cub clone. You aren't going to be able to sim a Marshall stack from it.

The THR can be a versatile practice amp or recording tool. THR is like playing through a pair of tiny studio monitors with a modeling toolkit in front of you. If you are very volume restricted, it can be great, but it is similar to playing through headphones. I found it kind of uninspiring, but I think a better musician could get use from it. It doesn't replace a real amp, hence the "third" amp branding. If you want a sound different than a small box tube amp, it can definitely do that for you.

That's really interesting, thank you for the insight! I was originally buying the THR to serve as a lower volume, maneuverable amp to use in place of my Mustang GTX50 at home. But it sounds like the THR and this Monoprice aren't redundant and it might be worth owning the Monoprice just to try a tube amp out.I'm reading that the Monoprice is loud even for a 5W. I was thinking of buying it just to try it out and potentially gifting it to someone getting into guitar as it'll definitely be better than a Frontman.

been waiting for a sale on these. also picked up the 30w cab they currently have on sale too (also posted here). this one makes a perfect bedroom amp. any beginner guitarist will be more than happy with it. i might try out changing the tube eventually too. thanks!

I bought this a couple years back and it's been great. I use it in my apartment for playing at low volume. It has worked great for 3 years and never had an issue. Tonally, It has really bright high end, decent mids, but not much low end. You can get a fantastic crisp clean tone dialed in. It's not loud enough to use in a band situation. But I find it pretty useful for recording. It doesn't have built in reverb, but it takes pedals really well. I put a Surfy Bear spring reverb in front of it and get a perfect surf tone out of it. Honestly, it sounds very similar to a Fender Princeton Reverb amp for like 10 percent of the cost. I keep the amp mic'd up in my apartment and record with it all the time. If it broke, I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

One cool thing you can do with this is run it with another amp. I split my signal coming out of my pedals and run one into my Fender Hot Rod and one into this Monoprice. The Monoprice adds a lot of high end sparkle and you can drive it really hard and get some cool breakup from tubes. It adds a lot to thicken out your sound.

Seems like you guys like this amp but not too sure I can recommend it honestly. Full disclosure though, I have the older version with the knobs on the top, but I thought I read somewhere that they're the same. The main issue with it is it gets muddy quickly anything past midway (which defeats the purpose of a tube amp IMO. I've taken it apart a bunch and messed with some things and made it more usable. Main thing I messed with was the tone control; from the factory it's just a treble cut like on a guitar but I turned it into a bass cut/treble cut control (like on a big muff). Way more versatile with that mod. What I figured out with it getting muddy when trying to crank it though I believe was due to a weak output transformer. Maybe it's been revised but my older one is a New Vantech 6093, is that what this one has?
