Why not just buy a rigid plug in one for a fraction of the price? Why do you need battery vacuum? Does one use this to vacuum the park?
The deal here isn't necessarily the vacuum. It's the 5.0ah battery that comes kitted with it. This battery sells alone for $329.00.

Resale value of battery alone is ~150-200

You're seriously asking why would someone need a battery powered vacuum? Lol

Came to say the same, but I see you mostly got TD for this one. Idk, a corded option at a far lower price makes sense to me too, but SD has spoken and I guess we're wrong

Another "wrong" person. Have a 20+ year old Ridgid 16 gal vac thats been abused and still works great.

I'm also on that list - got the Rigid deal several years ago...but damn, why do I want this Ego vacuum. I was hoping someone would talk me out of it!

Ok, I own 2 corded shop vacuums, one dewalt, one ridgid. In general, corded shop vacuums are a lot more cost effective and "powerful" than a battery counter part. However, I have purchased a flex 1.6 gal cordless vacuum recently with the Lowes Flex buy more save more sales event and the convenience factor is definitely worth the money I paid for (eventhough my small flex shop vacuum cost about the same as my dewalt one and suction power and capacity are both below my dewalt shop vacuum but it's so much more portable as I pair up the flex shop vac with my flex sander and other cordless powertools).

Another situation where I wish I had a cordless shop vacuum occurred last year. I bought some cheap rough cut fence pickets and culling 2X8 redwood boards and processed them with my neighbor's corded dewalt planer. The problem is we had access to only One 15 Amp outlet. Whenever we plug in both planer and one of our corded dewalt shop vacuum to suck up all the wood shavings, we can trip the circuit. The planer + shop vacuum can exceed 15 Amp draw. We had to settle for using a leaf blower to clean the planer just so we can continue to plane my fence pickets. You have to have some dust collection or some way to clean off all the wood shaving effectively as when the planer is full of wood shaving, you can't really use it well to say the least.

If you use your shop vacuum often and you don't want to drag the cord around, a powerful cordless shop vacuum is definitely convenient. This Ego, Milwaukee double battery M18 shop vacuum, Bosch heavy duty (not the $150 18V shop vacuum) shop vacuums are worth your consideration. Just remember, battery life is going to be bad. This one benefit from the 56V platform so its battery "lasts" longer. It's just simple physics. V * I = watt = work. So the higher voltage produce less potential waste in heat generated by the wiring (Amp * Amp * Resistance = heat wasted as current passes through your wire). The more powerful vacuums generally need more wattage. That's one big reason that corded shop vacuums are more powerful.

The real question is why the hell is a 5ah battery $329!? These have 28 Samsung 25r 18650's in them. Those batteries are $3-$4 apiece retail, but EGO Power is getting them much cheaper. There's less than $50 wholesale worth of electronics and plastic in them. All of these manufacturers tend to put exorbitant markup on their battery packs, but $329 takes the cake.

Expensive and not super durable. I have a graveyard now of Ego batteries. I'm up to 11 batteries all bought in the last 7 years. 5 of them are bad. That doesn't include the one that went bad but was still in warranty.
I love Ego tools but they are spendy and their batteries are way overpriced.

I think an easy analogy is inkjet printers. The ink isn't expensive for them. The printer itself is a loss-leader. The business plan is to recoup $$ on the ink over time. I suspect the batteries are where they make their money. I know a lot of R&D and time go into making these tools (and printers).
