1. After buying the phone in Walmart, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.
2. ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.
3. ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.
4. Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV
Sim swap instructions
1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.
2. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.
3. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement. Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.
4. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.
5. Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.
6. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.
Edit: Forgot to mention you will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night or so.

If I didn't understand it correctly please ignore the following concerned monologue:
I'm hoping neither Verizon nor Walmart will try to legally go after you since the iPhone Pro Max is worth over $1k which in some states in the USA could constitute a felony if it looks like you have a phone that you didn't pay for and someone somewhere makes a fuss.
Do you have any actual documentation that Verizon actually cancelled your contract and aren't billing you for anything?
Until you have some type of documentation from Verizon that shows the status of the phone I would definitely recommend NOT turning your phone over/surrendering your phone over to anyone…at least without a proper paper trail documenting who they are (make sure their ID matches their name/take a pic of the ID maybe), what business they represent, and maybe a signed acknowledgement that this specific person is taking possession of your phone (which has this specific IMEI and this specific Serial Number) for "insert reason here"…
The phone still being under contract might be why Walmart couldn't actually process the return…
Maybe you could go into a CORPORATE Verizon store and see if they can find your information and if you still actually are on contract for the phone or not…others here had mentioned that Corporate Verizon stores are where the phone can be successfully paid off.
If you're still stuck on contract with Verizon for the foreseeable future you could choose to wait 90 days while only paying the monthly minimum phone and line fees and then use T-Mobile's keep and switch deal to pay off up to $800/phone contract to help pay off your phone: https://www.t-mobile.com/switch/k...zon-or-att
You'd have to pay a T-mobile activation fee and 1 month of service for T-mobile BUT T-mobile would give you a prepaid debit Mastercard that could be used to help pay up to $800 off of your Verizon contract…
Multiple people on reddit who have used T-mobile Keep and switch just do 1 month of service with T-Mobile and jump ship after they get their prepaid card rebate.
Unlike AT&T & Verizon's new buying out a new customer's phone contract deal/"rebate" T-Mobile keep and switch doesn't seem to have a specific amount of time that you must remain with them to prevent them from charging you for the rebate card/clawing back their money.
It's just an idea of how you could recoup some costs if you're already paying for 1+ month(s) of service while you try to get this debacle cleared up.
While you fight to get this resolved you might yet need to get any associate interactions about this situation on video (check the state's law of if it's a 1 party or 2 party consent state for video recording) especially when you're trying to figure out what's going on with the status of your phone contract and your phone…
You might need to be in a "cover your butt" mode both so you don't accidentally steal a very expensive phone AND so you don't hand over a phone that you're still legally needing to pay for/have your phone stolen from you.
Good luck with this!
P.S. does the walmart egift card still have the $500 on it or has Walmart cancelled that card yet?
I just feel like I did nothing wrong and got caught up in this mess. I asked the staff before I bought the phone if they could help me pay off the phone after activate, and insisted I wanted to pay off at Walmart. They said yes, after I got back they passed the responsibility to Verizon and I tried to return it. But was unsuccessful at that time. I will continue to update this issue not because of the phone but so people will have a look if they are in the same situation.
I left only $1 , then walk into the store and say ,
"I am paying off my phone so my line be ready for Black Friday deals and I can upgrade because Verizon generally give gift during that week".
I used same words and he took the payment with out any issue. Also on their IPAD , you can show , there will be CASH option , then they have to use for buyout.
PAYOFF can only be done at CORPORATE STORE not AUTHORIZED STORES
I did this deal today again in store.again I blame ProudToBeAnIndian.
Online and instore experience are not seamless. Due to fraud protection in place, things are tedious to work with. Verizon ,specially is difficult to deal with as you have to send live photo along with ID Photos and cross your finger that everything go ok.
In store experience today was worst(due to new employee and employee wasn't paying attention.employee processed 3 orders on my name , so credit was run 3 times. But for sure it's a soft credit check). It took them 1 hour 50 minutes to complete everything. Anyways I was out of store with a $500 Gift card.
Paid full amount less $1 on Verizon account.
I tried following last two times. I am not sure if it will work this time. Will go home and try myself.Again YMMV
pay off with credit card
You need to establish a Verizon account
Go to Account, Bill, Payment methods
Add a credit card
If you have other Verizon lines, make sure you verify your Auto Pay is still pointing to the bank account
From a NON Verizon phone, call 800-837-4966
Enter the phone number for the line you want to pay off
Tell the robo attendant "pay off device"
Robo attendant will confirm the payoff amount ($) and if you would like to process on credit card ending in xxxx (what you have on file)
* Say yes, and that's it.
Disconnecting Verizon line
Login to your Verizon account
Start a chat
Request an agent
If asked, about plans/service
Say disconnect line
They will try to offer you other options or to disconnect at a later date
Insist you need the line disconnected now
If asked for a reason, say you cannot give them one
Verify total under Account, Bill, Next bill estimate
anyone know do we get activation $40 back from Verizon if we cancel the line in less than 3 days? Last time I got $40 back when I cancelled within 3 days. Not sure what is latest policy

You definitely might want to record this whole interaction on your older phone just to better cover your own butt just in case.
I'm concerned because Walmart tried to screw me over a few years ago in a different way by refusing to hand my appointed person the phone AFTER I bought it (I have severe asthma/immunocompromised and didn't consent to the phone being unboxed and messed with and this was still during COVID).
The phone was already showing up as being on a new AT&T contract with me while Walmart was refusing to hand it over.
I was close to calling the police on them since it was contracted to me already, but thankfully AT&T chat box was able to cancel the contract on their end and my appointed person finished the return at Walmart without having left the store the store at all. she never was handed over the phone at all after it was bought, but before it was returned.
I can hopefully do the deal online this year with a shit ton of screenshots of everything I agreed to…to cover my own ass…
Good luck on your stuff!
So does it only work with a new activation/new line device? Or completely unrelated, not on the same network unlocked phone? I was hoping not to add a new line but to just upgrade mine. My husband has an unlocked Iphone13 that is also on our ATT plan. Could I get a new iphone 16 (via upgrade from my old 8), then swap the estim from the 16 to his iphone 13 (which is attached to our ATT plan) and then unlock the 16? I just dont know if that would work because his iphone 13's number is an ATT number although unlocked.

If not, the process is the same? purchase phone, payoff device, cancel plan?
Anything different we need to consider for Tmobile?
TIA
930- 500+70 tax+75 dollar plan+40 dollar?
That would be around $620
So that final price will be "phone price +tax -$500?"… and then verizon account automatically cancel since there will be no phone number associated with the account
From Verizon website:
Prepaid Device Unlocking Policy
Devices that you purchase from Verizon and certain devices purchased from one of our authorized retailers are locked for 60 days after paid activation. After 60 days of paid active service and ordinary usage, we will automatically remove the lock unless the device is deemed stolen or purchased fraudulently. Following the 60 day lock period following device purchase, we do not lock our phones at any time.
