There are advantages to doing this with ATT instead of Verizon.

1. After buying the phone in Walmart, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.
2. ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.

3. ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.
4. Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV

Sim swap instructions

1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.

2. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.

3. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement. Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.

4. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.

5. Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.

6. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.

Edit: Forgot to mention you will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night or so.

Not started yet. I don't like gc promotion because you have to pay tax on the full amount.

Thank you for posting this deal! Is the following correct?

1. Order the iPhone 16 online to take part of this deal
2. Once phone is delivered, activate the phone and place a test call
3. Call Verizon or log into your Verizon account to pay off the phone and cancel your service within 3 days of activation
4. Receive the $500 walmart gift card
5. iPhone is unlocked after 60 days despite not paying for a Verizon plan at all

correct. I transferred eSIM from the unlocked 16 Pro bought Sunday to this new locked 16PM, waited for registration, then transferred back to the unlocked 16p. After waiting for a few hours, the unlock portal would not approve the request saying the phone belongs on someone else's account. So I transferred the eSIM back to the locked 16PM and tried unlocking directly from online account portal. That approved it immediately.

From all the various experiments I've done, I think it's safe to assume the phone you bought does not need to be unlocked on the same line that it was signed up with. You can safely pay off the phone and cancel the line and activate it on an existing ATT line for unlocking. Basically, as soon as the phone is paid off and the line is cancelled before you open the box, ATT recycles the IMEI back to Apple as Reseller Flex Lock policy and you can activate it on any carrier and follow their unlocking policy. In this case, ATT is still the most generous with its immediate unlocking loophole.
For ATT, now we're saying we can cancel even before unlocking? I suppose that only works because you have another line with an unlocked phone already with ATT right?
Wait, but I thought when Walmart ships it out, it's already activated, no?

I guess I never understood how (e)SIM swap worked.

Yes, if you have an existing line you can activate the a flex locked phone such as this and then request unlock or do a SIM swap on that line. However, if you are doing as a non ATT customer you will have to keep the line for unlocking purposes. When the phone ships out, the line with ATT is activated, phone is in a reseller flex locked state but it's with ATT till it paid off, one line is paid off it gets updated to apple that nothing is owed and it's put in flex locked mode.

FYI. I was just at Walmart today Tuesday 1900 hrs and they announced over the speakers they had iPhones and the 500 card available I went over to the phone section and ended up getting a 16 promax 256 black Verizon carrier. They did not have any 512 ones and did not carry them at the store. You have to have decent credit for Verizon Prices I paid were. Taxes on full price. $90 bucks. That's it. Plan was 75 a month but thru Walmart 25 bucks off so 50 a month for 36 months. Phone $30.25 a month x36 months free via credits with autopay. 30$ activation fee waived thru Walmart with auto pay. 500 dollar card via email came to my box within 15 minutes. So total free phone via credits Service 50 a month + tax uuI think.. x 36 months. (Currently paying 30 a month via metro on a family plan with siblings.) No activation fee and 500 virtual Walmart gift card. Must set up autopay within 48 hours for $25 monthly Walmart discount and waive of $30 activation fee. I checked the Verizon website at the same time and their deal is for 16 promax 256 free x36 months 512 +$5 x36 and 1tb +$10x36 and $40 activation fee. Don't know about needed plans. But figured the same basically. I will be going to a Verizon store tomorrow to check everything out that I signed up for and possible plan changes That's it…. pretty good deal overall. I was only paying 30 a month on metro before though. So 20 more a month switching to Verizon.

To add to that there are instances I think some Walmart in Arizona from where many phones were shipped out without activating with carriers and bunch of people for free phones ( I think one person here mentioned the same) as the payment info was not updated to apple. They would then go on to activate with cheap Verizon MVNO on the Verizon network and just wait for 60 days to unlock. Or activate on ATT or red pocket ATT MVNO and do a SIM swap to instantly unlock.

You can cancel the line before opening the box and the phone is under Reseller Flex Lock policy so you can activate it with any carrier and follow the new carrier's unlock policy. I could have activated this phone with my existing TMO account and have it unlocked after 40 days under TMO's unlock policy. However, since I still had an open ATT account, I decided to activate the phone with them and get it unlocked immediately with SIM swap. If I had a VZ account, I could have activated with them and get it auto unlocked after 60 days.

When WM ships the phone, they activate the line with carrier. When you open the box and turn on the phone, you activate the phone. Two slightly nuanced concepts. Activating the line doesn't automatically activate the phone.

To clarify your statement, when the phone is shipped, it's locked to ATT. Only after paying it off in full and cancelling the line before opening the box does it get back to Reseller Flex state. If you fail any of the 3 conditions above, then it stays locked to ATT.

We see this with Verizon as well. https://slickdeals.net/f/17910690-walmart-up-to-1k-in-bill-credit-towards-at-t-s24-iphone-16-pro-w-trade-in-from-free-w-36-mo-plan-up-to-500-walmart-gc-verizon-at-t?v=1&p=174281148&src=SiteSearch&peid=ac467420-c8bc-4261-a01a-04540f51ca0f#post174281148

It looks like different phones are coming with different restrictions. Mine was locked to verizon, while I recall some saying that there's were fully unlocked

Verizon employee said I couldn't pay it off. System would let him. Also said I have to wait 30 days to pay it off.
I had the same situation. You just need to try another employee that knows how to do it or another store. My account had a note on it also, but the way around it is to pay off the phone with cash, which for me I had to bring in $1,099 in cash to the store, but I was able to pay it off even with the system note.

Same here. I got an email almost 22 hours later that the unlock request was denied. Talk to another rep today and explained the situation. The rep told me there was unpaid balance, which I clarified wasnt there. So the rep helped me submit a new request and added a note saying the device has been paid off. Ill wait for 24 hours and see.
How did it end up? I paid off the phone yesterday, and upon chatting with CS, the agent said you need to wait 48-72 hours for the payment to be reflected, and also mentioned the generic 60 days of active account. My phone will arrive after the 3-day period, so I wanted to unlock it before the actual delivery.

So you got a $500 Walmart GC plus will be getting bill credits for the phone?!?! Pls report back if the bill credits are verified by Verizon rep because that certainly changes the math for others who may be ok being with Verizon long term and want to consider porting their number instead of signing up for new one & cancelling. Would you have gotten the same bill credits if you had ported your main number instead of signing up for a new one with Verizon?

I called verizon again today after 36 hours when my unlock request was put in. Now I think we should stop wasting time on this for early unlock and just wait for 60 days. This time I was somehow connected to a US rep (based on the accent) who was more knowledgeable about the situation. He said the unlock request put in by previous rep was still there, and will be possibly look at by the fraudulent department who probably will just deny the early unlock request due to the 60 day rule. He definitely believed that the previous rep should not put in the unlock request due to the 60 day rule.

If anyone plans to get this deal on Nov 24, avoid verizon with difficult/impossible pay-off and 60 days lock, while att allows online pay-off and instant unlock.
