If you need storage, the no storage model doesn't come with the tray.
The storage tray costs an extra $19 so $179 for 512Gb is pretty good deal.

'If you get into other UniFi accessories…'

UniFi is a deep, expensive hole. I started out with this exact gateway earlier this year and have expanded to multiple switches and miscellaneous hardware. Their ecosystem is amazing for those that want a little more control over their home network without having to play network engineer everyday. It's the Apple of networking. It just works and you get addicted to expansion.

There are a LOT of 3D print options online for this tray. Find a friend or do it yourself for pennies on the dollar.

In the world of Unifi, no matter how low you start, you gonna end up with a UDM PRO + POE Switch, or just have 1 UDM PRO SE (has POE). All these cheaper gateway are to get you in their eco-system, you learn you entered it too low in the product stack and you get a UDM series gateway eventually. Its like that free hit of drugs on the corner of a shady street.
Damn, what a rabbit hole. The DM PRO and Pro Max have an 8-port 1 Gbps switch, which is outdated at this point. If you are looking into the future, 2.5 Gbps should be available.

The only thing that is keeping me on pulling the trigger on the NAS is that i believe it has no UPS integration - therefore, in the case of a power outage, there is no graceful shutdown before the UPS battery dies. Others typically connect to the UPS by USB and can shut down proactively to prevent data loss. I've seen some people post about scripting on another device to send shutdown commands to the NAS over SSH, but that's too hokey for what i consider a basic spec point.
Holding out for updated hardware.

Isn't there ups that send messages thru network. Maybe it can just be a software update to understand the signal and shut down?

No, you can manually archive to your NAS to save footage, but there's no way to actually record directly to the NAS. They really want you in their ecosystem and for you to use their NVR.

Is this similar to the capabilities of a Firewalla?
I would like to know as well. Also is it a subscription model for capabilities like ad blocking?

Jokes on you, I have a UDM PRO connected to a XG 10 POE via its 10gbs SFP+, which means full 10GBE backbone. A UNAS PRO is connected to the XG10 POE via 10gbs SFP+ as well. Who said a UDM PRO is "out dated". The UDM PRO still has 1 additional 10gbs SFP+ free should I wish to expand to another XG POE unit, but not needed for now. The UDM PRO is already living in the future with 10x10GBE POE+++ ports.

Can you upgrade the storage on this by yourself? And can you then use the storage to record from cameras and doorbells?

You can change the NVME on your own, you can only use UniFi cameras with the recording capabilities.

UniFi has their own UPS line just released. In typical UniFi fashion, the UNAS can only communicate over the network with their UPS to shutdown vs standard linux NUT. Funny thing is their UPS has a standard linux NUT server built in so your linux/bsd boxes can communicate with it to shutdownt themselves. The whole UPS situation in the UniFi world is frustrating.
