I've had one of these for years and have always really liked it. But unless you really want to use the gaming features, I would just get the ONN model that was here on FP a while ago. It was about $50 and I am basically just as satisfied with it. The Nvidia does have a spectacular remote but the ONN one is pretty good too.

This is the 2019 Pro version, so it's 6 years old and still the king of streaming boxes.

Another thread bender - I have moved to $30 Onn 4K Plus boxes and have not looked back. Only possible advantage is audio, but if you are concerned about that along with some other small items then I would recommend you look at Formuler Zxx. I have moved away from Plex some time ago and am now using IPTV along with Stremio which has made my life far simpler.

yes, i plugged in a 1tb sandisk usb thumbdrive and shield is able to decode all audio/video codecs including TrueHD dolby 7.1 , dolby vision, HDR etc.

Can anyone comment on real-world quality of life improvements between this (2019) and the prior (2017) version? I have used the 2017 version since 2017 and love it. But lately it has been feeling more laggy and slow to load certain apps. I know this 2019 version uses the Tegra X1+ chip (as opposed to X1 in 2017 version). I'm curious if that will cause noticeable improvement.

I upgraded from the 2015 Shield. It's the same. Remote is maybe a bit better, but still bad. The 2015 is just as snappy as the Pro.

If its laggy you need to clean up whatever is causing it, I have a couple of both versions and none of them are laggy at all. The 2019 version has nice upscaling, besides that for my applications I see no difference between the two models.

I have no lagging but I have one that will randomly reboot itself while in plex or youtube playing videos.

Super annoying, happens about twice a month.

I thought we were supposed to see a next generation one of these soon, I mean its been out since 2019.

I would be concerned about how much life this has left with respect to OS updates. It is on a several year old release which means NVidia is long done with major updates. It might go fully EOL soon.

But hey I have a Shield K1 tablet from 2014 that I still sometimes connect to a TV, install SmartTube on and watch Youtube stuff, or install a video player with SMB support and watch most 1080p or lower files over the network. I also have the Shield gamepad for it.

I thought the Shield TV was more interesting when they still included the gamepad.

I'm not sure if any of you have used one of these recently... but DEAR GOD... they are so awful now. Laggy and buggy AF. Google destroyed these with their OS.
