I purchased four of these about a year ago to use in a NAS. I've had to RMA two of them already.

How is it? Not an unbelievable deal compared to the other WD Reds?

It will work, but the Pros are loud. You want the Red Plus, which are much quieter, and meant for Plex servers.

Doesn't it depend on whether the drive is helium-filled? Aren't those much quieter (and less power hungry)?

Just want to add the Plus is 3 year warranty and only 5400rpm vs 5 year and 7200 rpm for the Pro. But def the better choice for a plex server.

I made the mistake of a gold on my new build. I hate how loud it is compared to even my Red Pro.

My first Western Digital hard disk drive was a 200MB model and first Seagate was a 320MB drive.

I've purchased and installed hundreds of hard drives since for both personal and business purposes. This includes models from Western Digital, Seagate, Hitachi, Maxtor, and Samsung before HDD manufacturer consolidation occurred.

At this point I can safely say WD is gouging people with their drive pricing.

I've purchased four of these 18TB WD red pros for personal use between 2023 and 2024 for ~$300 each.

WD's costs to manufacture these 18TB drives have gone down significantly since they were introduced and the higher density models have come out... yet they keep prices high across their entire line up.

It's a shame all the HDD manufacturing consolidation has occurred and Seagate hasn't gotten their act together on drive reliability / dependability outside the enterprise market.

WD needs some competition rather than fatter profit margins.
