That really the reason why I for example went from iPhone 7 Plus to Pixel 4a, back to iPhone SE. it had only 3 years of support. Depreciation was not good at all. The Pixel 4a was a dead weight by end of life.
but you never paid full price for it. Compare what the cost is to use the device per year. Last year, I trade in my almost an year old 7 pro and got pixel 9 for $70. Assuming used 7 pro was $200, it costed me $270 to get Pixel 9. Now, if I use 9 for 3 years before it is dead weight, then my cost is under $100 per year.
Now let's check 15 series. It was launched at $829. With taxes, that comes out to be $870 and current trade in value by apple is roughly $300 - which is gift card and not true cash. It's not dead weight yet but in 3 years, it lost almost $600.
If you wanna consider this $530 as great deal, then with taxes it is about $570. And you already lost $270 if you just went to trade in to Apple now.
This doesn't seem like much of a deal considering you can trade in an old phone and get this for $500 from Tmobile (I assume other carriers have similar deals).

These "deals" are crazy to me. Do this and buy a 17 for $600 in two years when it's time to upgrade. Or buy a 17 brand new for the same price as both of those and be done paying it off at the same time you would be thinking of upgrading to a 17 had you bought this 15.

Appreciate your reply! She is currently on an iPhone SE first gen. We have a grandfathered TMobile family plan that is $120/month for unlimited everything (4 lines), and we don't plan on switching plans/carriers. I'll check out the Verizon deal if it unlocks after 2 months.
You'll need to pay for at least two months on Verizon prepaid Unlimited plan to unlock the phone. Besides, the 16e is not a good phone - one camera only. Customers, especially female, mostly use cameras on their smartphones.
I am on a Simple Choice grandfathered plan unlimited everything for 3 lines that cost me around $120/month. Same situation - TMobile doesn't offer anything anymore, so I have to buy the phones or to switch carriers. After they increased the plan prices, now it is actually feasible to jump carriers.
If you want to stay with TMobile, this iPhone 15 is your best deal for switching from SE. If you have iPhone 13 or 14, it is not worth it.

I understand your point and quite frankly, the only phone that I lost in a trade was the iPhone 7 Plus. $350 brand new and traded it in for $200 3 years later. I'll never buy brand new highest storage iPhone again. The baseline is good as it get to avoid deep depreciation.

Same situation (iPhone SE3 on T-Mobile) however I went for brand new iPhone 12 mini. Free! Good for 1-2 years max. trade in value may be little but I'll just keep it as an "iPod touch" and get the better iPhone and price by then.

It a very good deal for those who is too stubborn to upgrade their pre iPhone 12 and SE1, SE2, and SE3.

yep, my usual math is; is my buying price within 20% and under $100 then what I would get to trade in right now. If it is, then I'd make a move. Like, I got 16e during that $299 deal from Straight talk. After cashback and extra payment for getting it unlocked, it costed me about $320. I can sell it for about $300 right now so hopefully by the time 18 series is available, it would still be 250.
My SE3 works fine. Yes, the lightning cable.... Looking a this deal, but ehhh... Would like a Pro instead.
I think u will like the 15. But I understand why you want a beefier iPhone that the SE3 completely lack. I still have my SE3 as my daily driver and 12 mini as my 2ndary. The SE3 is a minimalist iPhone lol.
