In my use case, it'd be better if the power cord plugged into the other end of the device (top). Sitting flat on a desk with the power cord going through a hole in the back of the desk. For me, the power cable would either have to do a 180, or the charger screen be upside down, or the power cord comes down the front of the desk. Even plugged into the side, it would allow both use cases (wall or desk).

Yeah, this does seem like an odd layout. Power input on the top seems like it would be way better for most users. I'd actually prefer it to be on the back of the unit, but I think the top would still be better for most. Having it on the bottom seems good for only wall mounted setups, which I'm guessing is a small minority of users.
I was also surprised by the 4.7 / 5 star review average, thinking that more people would have this complaint, until I realized that the vast majority of reviews seem to be for completely different products. The first few reviews I saw for this actual product are mostly less than 5 stars.

I agree with you here, the product design team didn't think this one through
This is one of those products that probably supplies the average consumer with TMI. You are going to have someone who never considered how many watts and at what voltage their phone is charging at to suddenly having a holy war with 3rd tier tech support because now they can see the device is (apparently) pulling too much / little per their expectation.
The selling point of this charger is that it is UL listed>. Most of other chargers on Amazon are Chinese with ETL or no certification. About the power supply cord, it's designed as a desktop charger, so, it can be lay down flat as one of the pictures. I would pick charger with UL listed over any other charge any time.
