Bought this when it was $30 from Walmart. Actually works very well.

Important to note that it's app only. There are no controls on the device other than a power button.

You do not need to pay subscription to use it unless you want wifi capability. It is free to use via the app/Bluetooth.

Overall it's pretty good but during a cook the app can struggle to refresh if you leave and come back to it so what I do is close out the app entirely and reopen and it has consistently connected after that. Not too bad of an issue but worth noting

these are great, easiest example is for meat- you're not boiling them, you're holding them at specific temps so that the proteins behave certain ways. e.g. 144°F chicken breast is more or less rare and safe to eat because it's been pasteurized, but the meat won't get stringy or tough because that's a side affect of being exposed to high heat.

great stuff- lots of kenji articles on serious eats about it. buying a couple of these to hand out as gifts, lol- annoying to have to use app to set it, but it's 20$ a pop which is less than aldi's cheapo SVs when they have them randomly.

I bought this recently, and just to clarify: a subscription is not required to use the sous vide. The app does promote a subscription, but one can navigate past it and use every function of the device without paying anything. It's a fully usable, no-cost experience as long as the app remains available.

If manufacturers think this is the future, they have another think coming. Who do they think they are, Microsoft? They need to do a survey or something - making an otherwise functional device non-functional is a great way to make customers hate your brand.

I've been trying to up my steak game for a while now. What made me buy this was the unevenly-cooked ribeye at TX Roadhouse this past weekend. Part was medium rare, part was medium well. Very little sear.

I'd rather screw up my own steak for cheaper, thank you very much!

"no-cost experience as long as the app remains available."? What does this mean??
The "no cost experience" depends on the app continuing to exist. The device doesn't function without the app, so if Anova removes the app/stops supporting it, the device would be a brick.

I bought a set of headphones that never shipped. Never got anything from customer support, wasn't ever even able to talk to a person.

Finally had to do cancel payment through my cc, then they kept trying to recharge my cc, actually had to cancel it and get a new card with a new number.

Where these really shine is reheating steak. Now that I think about it that is the only thing I have ever used mine for.

Excuse me what?
My comment was aimed at the full app capabilities which can be unlocked for a recurring fee. The basic capabilities are not affected.

I have inadvertently mentioned that the monthly fee is $10, which is incorrect, this is the annual fee. Maybe low enough to pay for it if you're interested in, say, program the gizmo to start cooking while you are not around, say a few hours before you leave work, once the meat is thawed.

I'm genuinely confused why don't you check Google or YouTube explaining what Sous Vide is instead of waiting for some random person to come and explain it to you.

I don't get the point of asking here and waiting for someone to reply when you can just google or search YouTube for a video explaining what Sous Vide is.

If this is like the one that was on sale a few weeks ago, it requires an app to use and does not work if you don't have internet. Don't buy this.

Well, it helps to think of a post on a forum as a group conversation and a social activity, Doing a search and finding the information does not inform others and thus the collective time is wasted. One person explaining in the thread is not only much more efficient for the group, since not every person who needs that information has to individually look it up, but asking for the information is a social indicator which shows that this particular place has activity people are interested in, and it draws more viewers.

There is a lot more going on with human motivation than a simple 'I want the answer to this question'.

Perfect explanation, thank you. Vor, I did research before posting lol thanks for the poor assumption. I was looking for unique ideas (like reheating steak) that I just read. I just see people use them all the time and trying to figure out why they are so popular.
