Bought this when it was $30 from Walmart. Actually works very well.

Important to note that it's app only. There are no controls on the device other than a power button.

You do not need to pay subscription to use it unless you want wifi capability. It is free to use via the app/Bluetooth.

Overall it's pretty good but during a cook the app can struggle to refresh if you leave and come back to it so what I do is close out the app entirely and reopen and it has consistently connected after that. Not too bad of an issue but worth noting

these are great, easiest example is for meat- you're not boiling them, you're holding them at specific temps so that the proteins behave certain ways. e.g. 144°F chicken breast is more or less rare and safe to eat because it's been pasteurized, but the meat won't get stringy or tough because that's a side affect of being exposed to high heat.

great stuff- lots of kenji articles on serious eats about it. buying a couple of these to hand out as gifts, lol- annoying to have to use app to set it, but it's 20$ a pop which is less than aldi's cheapo SVs when they have them randomly.

I bought this recently, and just to clarify: a subscription is not required to use the sous vide. The app does promote a subscription, but one can navigate past it and use every function of the device without paying anything. It's a fully usable, no-cost experience as long as the app remains available.

Good price, but keep in mind that new users will need to pay a monthly $10 subscription for the full app. If you are grandfathered in, great.
What does the full app offer?

Never mind, just saw an answer previously posted

You can get the exact same results with a portable induction stove and a thermometer or even some slow cookers if you can get the right temperature out of them.

No, slow cookers do not offer fine control of temperature, which is exactly what this sous-vide cooker offers. But there are ways to intermittently turn a "dumb" slow cooker on and off to achieve a similar result. See for example this older add-on https://www.cnet.com/reviews/dork...sv-review/

What do you use these for? I don't understand them. Does everything just taste like the restaurants where you boil your own food in front of yourself?
Interesting. I've never been to one of these self boil restaurants. Can you elaborate more please?

Heating plastic is the issue. It rapidly degrades and releases all sorts of harmful chemicals.
"BPA contents of samples sous-vide-cooked at different temperatures and cooking levels, calculated as the average of two replications, are also given in Table 3. BPA content of the samples ranged between 5.87 and 27.11 ng/g depending on cooking temperature and level. Lowest BPA migration after cooking was observed in the samples cooked to a level of well-done at 85 °C."
"The results of variance analysis and the Duncan multiple-range test results on BPA migration levels in the samples are also given in Table 4. As seen in the table, cooking temperature, cooking level, and the interaction of cooking temperature and cooking level had no significant effect (p > 0.05) on BPA migration."

I have the Annova with a touch display. Couldn't connect it to my WIFI but that's Ok, I don't want to use Ana app for a kitchen appliance. For the reason of connectivity problems, I wouldn't buy this.

How do you circulate the water. If set this up in a cooler with removable lid

Nothing! I own this, no controls on the unit except power
If you really own one, then you would know that you can control the unit in the app for free...

Things that should just not even have an app...
I like these for chicken and pork chops though. 2 things that are a little easier to dry out
