Assuming a mac has a 7 years lifecycle from release to end of support. This mac is already a year old which gives the owner 6 years. This comes to a cost of $208 per useful year. You can but the new M5 for 1349 at several places right now. 1349/7 years is 193 per year. So this "deal" is more expensive than getting a new model mac which is also faster and more capable.

It's true in that regard but the year old M4 Pro processor handles advanced computer better than the M5 so you have to take that into account too if you're not going to use it for general use.

The sentiment is m5 is better on basic single core tasks like browsing and general usage but the m4 pro is better on more complicated multi-core stuff like video editing, coding, etc.

Yeah but you're also getting a faster SSD and a faster chip for $100 more. If it was $150-200 less than the m5 it would be worth it, but when you're spending $1250, might as well spend the extra $100 for the latest and greatest.

There's no such this as latest and greatest..some of the most reliable machines are now on sequoia, not tahoe. And apple reverts design choices like going back to scissor switches from butterfly..yet butterfly was the "latest"
