This Kobalt grip style inflator is a handy low cost air tool for quick tire checks and topping off, with a stem grip that feels more secure than older brass styles. The gauge has been reported as close to other gauges on some units, and the compact setup works well enough for spare tanks and general garage use. The main drawback is consistency, since other units have leaked, read several psi high or low, or could not be calibrated. Fit and visibility can also be awkward, especially with hose adapters or left handed use, so it is a practical budget pick if you can live with some variability.

I want to use it to check water heater expansion tank but think an additional air compressor may be necessary to connect it, right?
Does it have a valve stem like a car tire on it? then it would work. Price went up a few $ I am guessing no it has a pipethread plug on the tank? Then you likely need different adapters and would need to squeeze the silver handle then water would squirt out of the yellow hose. A fantastic squirtgun but not mobile.

I bought one 12/23 and used it a lot. It leaked out of the box at the release button and that was an easy fix. A few months ago the gauge jumped up to 15 with no air so I've been using it knowing it was 15# high. Instead of buying a new pressure gauge it was roughly the same price to just buy another complete unit.

Oh, and if you are left handed, you will be looking at the back of the gauge or have to hold it upside down. The gauge is attached with some solid anaerobic sealant that dries hard. If you want to reposition or spin the gauge for a better view, you will have to completely remove it, clean it up and reseal it yourself.
How did you fix the air leak at the release button? Mine leaks at the trigger when under presssure from the tire. Any ideas?

Mine read same as my tire gauge. I'm happy with it. Close enough.

It was either with an o-ring or some RectorSeal and teflon tape, I don't remember. Your leak may be from the trigger mechanism itself.. I didn't take that apart there but probably an o-ring or a seal there in when it is released.

I've owned one for several years, do yourself a favor and skip this one. Get something better. It's junk.

anyone know if these can be calibrated? i bought one from HF and it's off about 5psi.
I bought one 2 years ago that cannot be calibrated. It's off by 9psi compared to a couple of my other gauges.

I added some threadlocker to prevent leaks. Works great after that!

Bought one. Keeps leaking air dropping the pressure. Can't get accurate psi. I do not recommend.

I have had several of these cheap gauges fail within a year or two when the dial warps and impedes the needles travel. Possibly leaving it in a hot Houston garage during the summer accelerates this issue. After the third died (this model and a Harbor Freight), I gave up and bought a cheap digital.

If it's a typical gauge, you can open it up and bend the springy thing until you get the right pressure reading. But that only works if it's reading under (in which case, the pin at zero is holding it at zero rather than the needle dropping under. If it's reading high, you can set it to read the correct at your desired pressure range, but it will likely be off at zero. Or you can replace the gauge for $5-10. Or return it. I'd probably just return it.
