Traditionally real "Puffer" jackets always had down or feathers as their main component (hence the lateral stitching design to keep the internal contents from bunching).

I've noticed that over the last 5-10 years you really have to stick with quality brands to get down in puffer coats. I used to find them in Walmart versions of puffers but now I only see polyfill.

REI and Eddie Bauer had some fairly affordable down options.

yep, you're not wrong! Hence my negative sentiment toward the enshittification with these plastic-heavy garments.
