Snarky answer: just like in life, theres many different price points for different segments with different features. Why should a sedan car cost 100k+ when 20k sedan do trick?
Non snarky answer: Phillips Hue is known for its lighting quality, ecosystem, and general stability (using a hub model and previously zigbee compared to other smart lights). Sure you can buy a regular RGB bulb with wifi, but if you want an entire house of lights (it adds up), wifi tends not to be reliable and Philips hue usually "just works". (I have 40+ Phillips hue products, but there are people with 100+)

If you don't need 100W equivalent, the Aqara T2 E26 are great (75 W equiv). Color reproduction as good as Hue, though slightly different so I wouldn't mix and match. Matter over Thread or Zigbee (it is a little annoying/time consuming to reflash them to zigbee, but it's all in the Aqara app). I have them paired directly to Home Assistant but in Zigbee mode might you might be able to pair them to a Hue bridge? I have both Hue and Aqara and no one else comes close to matching the quality of the colors. Amazon just recently had the Aqara for $17.99 each but they're now back up to $22.99. If you only need this form factor, and don't want to put it in the same room as Hues, I'd recommend them. It's too bad they only have these and GU10s though. Most of my bulbs are BR30, so they're Hue instead.

Yea, I have dumped Hue after an 8-year run. I moved from a large house house into a medium-sized apartment. So a complete redo of my residence. I am using Wiz and Kasa bulbs and retained a few Hue lights from the move for ambience purposes (i.e. behind my tv).

What's wrong with TP-Link Tapo? They are matter enabled. How are Hue bulbs so much better that they are 4x the price? Car comparison doesn't really work. Luxury cars have perceived value. Bulb/smart bulb is a technology and should strictly be valued on what they offer. There is no perceived value here.

You had a chance to make this a helpful contribution to the thread by sharing what these better alternatives are, but you didn't. I've tried Hue and Govee myself, and Hue is much more reliable in my experience. I had to restart and reconnect the Govee bulbs more in 3 months than I did the Hue bulbs I had for 5 years prior to that. Also, the Hue colors are much more accurate and less washed out.

Even seemingly simple things like fade from off to 40% at sunset are either not doable or not easy with Govee. My Hue fades on in the morning frum dull orange to bright white over 30 minutes to wake my butt up. Cannot do that with Govee so far as I am aware. I can set a time, but Hue shifts with the time of year to maintain a constant sunset timing.

Don't forget that Govee had a massive security breach with personal information ending upon the dark web. I dropped them after that and have been using Philips Hue since then.

There's nothing wrong with Tapo just like there's nothing wrong with Hue, to people who use Hue, its worth it to us to pay "extra" for the all the things I mentioned because that's what we value for day to day use. If you're happy with the Tapo great! Also more competition is great, for a long time, it was basically just Hue and cheapo bulbs. I actually use twinkly and Govee for my outside decorative lights because I didn't want to pay the hue tax for that niche and its good enough for that purpose, but something I use every day, Hue is what I use for smart bulbs and Lutron Caseta for the dumb bulbs to be smart.

Directly comparing this Hue to the Tapo L535E, the Hue has more lumens, less congested zigbee radio space (not wifi matter), but mainly the ecosystem, yep, Hue tax, but I can easily link my LG TV Hue app to any light via the app, you can't do that via Tapo in one go. Also, I use a ton of the Lutron Auroras which solves people not being able turn off the bulbs at the switch.
Is Hue as perfect as I seem to make it out to be? No, but its pretty good at what it does, that's the value to us.

I'd been making offers for the 1600 lumen white ambiance Hue bulbs for $30 on eBay and no one was taking them.

Will gladly take 2 color versions for $35 new each. Thanks!

I have Phillips Hue in my home. I have Hubitat. I just purchased some Govee stuff including their AI Sync box.

I am aware of what makes Phillips Hue more expensive... but their products have been extremely pricey for what this crap is. They don't deliver a product worth the premium.

I'll take Govee at this point in my life. I can nerd out with my color LEDs and not feel like I committed to a major home renovation.

You don't need a bridge for just 2 lights, but you'll have decreased functionality since it uses Bluetooth without a bridge.

You'll need to be within Bluetooth range to control them (basically in the same room). You won't have automations or the ability to use smart switches

You absolutely can use hue lights with switches without the bridge.

Nothing but problems for me. Cheap wifi bulbs worked much better for me at less than 20% the price. I have a seperate IOT network and run Home Assistant. Hue caused me nothing but problems and couldn't reach the other side of my relatively small house.

People say Hue "just works" and for the price it better, but I've had various issues with some Hue light bulbs not responding (i.e. not turning off or on or dimming like they are suppose to) and it was quite annoying. TP-Link seems to be more reliable.
