It MAY approach $20, but last year I played the waiting game into February and ended up paying $30, the best price at that time

I'd jump on it. No point to waste time and effort on keeping track of sales to save a couple of bucks. It is splitting pennies here, but technically, if you are due a refund of any meaningful amount, you may as well file early(ier) and earn an extra buck or two in a savings account or a CD.

I'll stick with FreetaxUSA.

So mad bought the previous stupid deal to include VPN that I don't need. So lost out on $3.

Can't believe all these thumbs up… On this price point. Historically, this is a very bad price…
But I guess some believe that this price will not go any lower… But history often proves that it will.
2023 price history didn't prove to work for 2024. Last I checked a time machine cost more than the $2 difference from last year's standalone, not-YMMV low, which is also literally history.

Prior to last year, yes. I chose to wait and since it never dropped further, ended up biting the bullet and tried out FreeTaxUSA. Slightly more painful to use since I could not load 1099s from my brokerages, but the UI is actually better. I was a satisfied customer with HR Block for 20 years, but I won't be back, unfortunately.
I might go with FreeTaxUSA this year too. Never used them before but PCMag says it's their preferred free filing service for what that's worth. I've been using H&R Block for a few years but their web site says State filing is $37 now, vs $16 at FreeTaxUSA.

I've always paid for deluxe + state and then been frustrated about paying to e-file. For those of you who mail your state, do you still buy deluxe + state? Or do you pay for vanilla deluxe?
Deluxe+State. Prepare both using software, e-file federal, print and mail state.
Again (and again and again): "+State" is for tax preparation software. E-File is a completley separate thing.
If you buy just deluxe version (without state), you have to prepare your state return in old fashion way: calculator + pencil.
And, frankly, I do not get why you are frustrated. It says black on white that state e-file if extra and not included in your package. So you do know what you're buying, especially if you do it year after year.

You forgot to factory in a printer and ink cost. 15 a year is worth it not owning a printer
You're assuming that the printer isn't used to print other documents. But heck, to each his own.

I need some advice. I have always used TurboTax to file income tax returns. But it's expensive. Is it a good idea for me to try out the H&R Premium to file joint federal taxes? I have W2s and will receive documents from Robinhood and Webull. Thanks!
I switched away from Turbo Tax years ago when they started with bloatware. It was fine. The only inconvenience I had was one year I had to over-ride a figure, and H&R wouldn't allow file with an over-ridden figure. So I had to mail it in.

2 week wait is not bad worth the savings imo even if using certified mail to be safe if you are close to the deadline. States like NY have free state file by law (thanks Mamdani), not sure if there are others so look yours up.
NY has done that for a long time. You likely know it has nothing to do with mamdani, not sure everyone does. Not to mention, the NYC incoming mayor would have no power to make state mandates. And to my knowledge, no other state does that.
Considering it's a lot less work for them to process an e-Filed return, and NYS got away with that, I'm surprised more states haven't done that. The tax prep software companies no doubt wouldn't like that but get real, it's a major profit item for them.

Fair enough, thanks for the response. The frustration was more at myself that I don't remedy the problem and continue to pay for e-file. I don't think it is a hidden "gotcha" moment. Just wanted to know the best way to prep state otherwise.

You can download the software for 1 state for free. Filing the state by mail is free. Some states (like mine) have a website where you can type in the numbers and e-file for free So I just print it as a PDF, log into my state's website, copy down the numbers from the PDF and submit it electronically for free. Takes me 10 minutes maybe. For me that's faster and cheaper than driving to the post office, waiting in line and paying for a trackable postage.
"You can download the software for 1 state for free."
Only if you get a "plus state" version, deluxe plus state versus deluxe by itself. The higher ones (premium and business) include one state return (e-file extra except for NY).

Yes, but make one stock purchase using that time machine and it pays for itself.

Anyone know if the 2025 version handles foreign taxes (Form 1116) better ? The previous versions weren't good at handling these.
