Since this thread will probably get a lot of views let this be my yearly reminder that when it comes to the desktop/download version, virtually no one needs anything other than Turbotax Deluxe.

TT strongly pushes Premier and Home & Business but the fact is that TT Deluxe can handle every situation that these more expensive versions can. The only exception that I am aware of is the ability to create W2 and 1099 forms for employees in H&B.

Deluxe has everything for all investment types, everything for owners of rental properties, everything for self-employed (1099-NEC/Schedule C filers), everything for those who do itemized deductions.

The higher versions offer more guidance but Deluxe has all the forms required and will still walk you through all of it.

Note that Turbotax Online is completely different, Deluxe Online is purposely limited forcing more complex returns to use the more expenisve Online versions than Deluxe.

Friendly reminder that this now requires Windows 11 and unfortunately will not work on Windows 10.

Or just do freetaxusa and get the same experience on the web for free. I think state is like $15 if you want to do that through them too

FreeTax only imports documents from your computer. I'm sure this has confused people. It will not seamlessly pull all your tax info from your brokerage firm.
And freetax takes your uploaded documents to train their AI models.

Not sure how seamless it will be since it's new this year, but it does import documents via PDF. I suspect that digitally downloaded PDFs will work really well, especially from big brokerages, while using a picture or scan will be more variable since it relies on OCR. I DO like that you don't have to share your login info with them to import though.

Let me be more clear. TT asks questions and it populates the forms, but you dont know which form it populated when you enter a value. You can view or edit the form, if you can figure out which forms it populated. H&RB shows you the form and the location of the entry when you answer the question. Doesnt work exactly the same.

Specific example. The TT forums are full of questions why the educational credits forms are not populated correctly since you enter the answers to the interview. Then you look at the form and it is wrong. You dont actually see the entry in the form when you type the answer, you need to bring up the form and it is wrong. In HRB, when you type the answer, you see the entry in the form change. Turns out that in TT the entry doesnt change the form unless you go thru the entire section interview completely.
Interesting. I just tried this with an older copy of TT and HRB. For the specific form you mention (education credit), TT does not allow you to view the forms in real-time as you enter data. However, when I do it for the mortgage interest deduction, it can show the form and questions simultaneously as well as update the form in real-time as data is entered. Confused

This is my annual comment to remind people that if they purchase the digital download of tax software, Amazon will apply any no rush shipping credits that you have on your account as they consider software an eligible digital purchase.

For those of us not buying apps, ebooks or renting videos this can add up to a nice little discount.
Apparently not this year. Had $6.50 digital download credit that would not apply.
From another comment in this thread:
"Digital credits can only be used for digital purchases, by combining a physical GC with the digital TT download they effectively block the use of digital credits for this deal.

Yes I agree, Amazon is scummy by doing this intentionally."

Does Deluxe support connecting to and importing transactions from financial institutions? Instead of having to manually input everything.

And it's totally optional.
At the same time, import to TT requires sharing your brokerage login/password with them. I'm not sure which is worse.

No it doesn't automatically sync (nor should you want Intuit to automatically get a copy of your info) but you can import the desktop tax file into the online version next year

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-...G_US_en_US
Thank you for the explanation.

You can only apply it to the "normal" listing, not the one with the GC; so it won't stack.

Only useful to use the digital credits if you have more than $10 worth.

It's never worked with the gift card option but they also offer the software without the gift card at the same price. I always get most of my Christmas shopping shipped with credits so when this rolls around I get a decent deal even without the gift card. It does sting a little that I can't have both.

My child had internship income in two different states last year, and we usually file taxes together. Will one deluxe turbo tax be sufficient? Thank you!

I've used TurboTax for year-end planning each year since the 1990s. This year, they screwed the pooch. Important sections of Step-by-Step are missing, including Roth conversions, 1099-B, etc. The missing sections are not limited to those impacted by OBBB. And I'll point out their marketing claimed it was up-to-date with latest changes as of early November. I'm not talking about complete enough to file; I'm talking about complete enough to do estimates. Here we are January 2 and there hasn't been an update since December 17th.
Can you elaborate on the Roth conversions? I do back door Roth IRAs and want to make sure TT 2025 will handle it.
