I got this as part of a kit at Sam's Club. It's definitely not instant. It's fine, but saying this seems disingenuous.

I have this and a thermapen... use the themapen most the time, both are good.

This thermopro has magnets, so sticks to microwave next to stove... nice.
BUT... you must press the button to release the probe from the closed position... first week using it, I grabbed it and pulled it open.. breaking the locking mechanism. Now it won't stay closed.

The locking button design is bad idea IMHO... more parts. Could've just had a detent to hold it shut, or a little magnet.

whatever... my $0.02 from owning both

Bought this same exact one for $12.99 when it was on sale about 4-5 years ago. Served me well and used many times. Unfortunately after so much abuse it gave out.. For this price it's a damn good price and I'm sure it will last another 4-5 years.

Yes, while good for 8 bucks, real ones know how good the thermapen really is.

I have both. FWIW I find I use this one 80% of the time over my thermapen because I'm weirdly protective of it. My first one gave out after about 5 years.

Same thing as my Civivi D2 vs my S90v Spyderco. Carry my Civivi edc. Don't want to mess the other up.

Don't use it so it won't break, how can you argue with logic like that?.....

Echoing many other comments, I've had this for years and it's been rock solid. Temps are accurate and reads in just under 3 seconds. Yeah, it's not "instant" but I paid $13 for mine and I've been VERY happy with it. It's not waterproof, but honestly... This isn't something you're going to chuck into the dishwasher. Wipe the probe with soapy sponge, rinse the soap off, wipe it dry, and stick it on your fridge or microwave.

FYI, this uses a single AAA battery and it works perfectly fine with a NiMH rechargeable battery. I've been using recycled Panasonic NiMH batteries from cordless phones and it's been great (not Eneloops, but they're free). No button cell foolishness!

Bonus: For any fellow DankPods fans out there, all of mine came with genuine PKCell batteries.
