That statement is partly true but overstated.

What's true

Zinc and iron can compete for absorption in the intestine, especially when:

They're taken together in high doses

They're in supplement form, not food

The competition happens because they share some transport pathways (notably DMT1).

What's misleading

It's not "pointless" to take them together.

The interaction is dose-dependent:

Moderate doses (≈ ≤15 mg zinc, ≤18 mg iron) usually cause minimal interference

The problem is more pronounced with therapeutic doses (e.g., 50 mg zinc or 65 mg elemental iron)

Food vs supplements

When zinc and iron come from whole foods, absorption competition is usually minor, because:

Different chemical forms are present

Digestion slows absorption

That's why normal diets commonly include both without causing deficiency.

Practical guidance

If you're taking high-dose supplements, spacing them out is smart:

Take zinc and iron 2–4 hours apart

If you're taking a multivitamin with modest amounts of both, it's generally fine.

If iron is taken to treat deficiency, it should usually be:

Taken alone

Away from zinc, calcium, and magnesium

With vitamin C to improve absorption

Bottom line

Zinc and iron can compete for absorption, but saying it's "pointless" to take them together is inaccurate. It only really matters with high-dose supplements, not normal dietary or multivitamin amounts.

much better value

https://www.amazon.com/Puritans-P...B00CM6QYSW

oh btw they removed the titanium-dioxide from newest formulations, whew

you shouldn't take all 30mg at once, your body is going to discard most of that

do not take zinc with iron, they compete for absorption so it's pointless

Puritan's Pride is a Nestle brand and their products are not third party tested. I'd avoid them.
