Why does a motion sensor switch need to be a smart switch?

Really think about your application and if it will ever pay back. Let's call this $20 for the sake of easy numbers. For me, and I pay $0.28/kwh which is very high, that's 71kwh payback. If this controls a 10watt LED then the switch, assuming it lasts that long, needs to save 7142 hours of runtime to pay for itself which is about 300 days.

So yeah don't approach this as if it's going to save money.

uh what, this is for the convenience...no one is trying to save cost with this (even though it does). i don't have to touch the light switch when i open the closet door for instance

I purchased 8 of these switches 2 years ago. I thought they would work great and all-in-one, I was wrong.

They have huge FW problems and they know it. For some reason they don't want to fix it unless you create a ticket. Even than it has problems. The stock FW has a memory leak and it locks up. The switch will fail in either positions and the manual switch will stop working. This is a huge fire hazard and breaks local code.

Do not buy their switches. Their switches has several issues and not worth any price. So sad, since it started so strong 6 years ago.

I have tons of their regular, 3 way and dimmer switches, plus the plugs, never once have they locked up

I was thinking the exact same thing. Then I saw the reply to you about using it for a bathroom fan, and I still don't get it.

it's nice to have it turn to minimum brightness when getting up to pee in the middle of the night

Why does any switch? "Need" is based on personal choice. There could be rules in the app, scenes, whatever. If YOU can't think of a reason then it probably isn't for you.

The 3-ways had their issues and first batch was the worst. Those are working good enough for me. The single pole, switches are fine.

I had tons of problems with this model the most, ES20M. You check Reddit and you will find others with issues.

All the 100 switches were happier when they are on their own vlan. The vendor even told me to do that. I created a vlan just for one of the ES20M and it still locked up. Make sure your WiFi is only 2.4 for them.

The smart part is for the settings like post-sensor timer and light brightness at a certain time of day or night. You can set it to be on when you shower and then say you want the fan to stay on for 2 mins after you walk away, or any amount of time to clear smells from the toilet area or humidity.

So many reasons.
You can program for what routines you would like. Check Home Assistant or other controller apps.

I like the lights to turn different brightness depending the brightness of the room and time of day. All based on presence. It is so nice to walk into a space and not need to touch anything. Than the lights just turn off automatically.

Unlimitedly mmWave is better and you will learn you might want that.

Is any of this NEEDED, nope. Is it nice to have things automated and remote, yes.

Holiday decorations is also a nice thing.
