Bizarre. The RAM alone is $249. But the Combo with a quality mobo is $209? Soooooo, who's gouging the prices of memory? Is it the MFGs, or is it Newegg? I'm not blaming the retailer, all of them have followed suit, and I get 16Gb is less desirable.

Things that make you go Hmmmm.

it all started with that zalman $30 case and i was like okay well its a bad time to build a pc but its a good deal so i'll pick it up and save it for later but then i started paying attention to mobo bundles and this is actually halfway decent if you dont mind the 16gbs
now i gotta look for a good am5 cpu for this bundle 🥲

This is a poor set of ram, its two 8 gig sticks instead of two 16 gig sticks. not really what the AI folks are looking for right now.

nobody wants the 16g of ram is the reason, 64g is ideal and 32g is for some poor folks on a budget

Depends on what their inventory system does. A business has to float purchasing based on future needs. So maybe they bought and had this RAM in their inventory at a lesser price previously and it hadn't moved much. They COULD sell at the lesser value but then if they did that they would not get enough in profits to cover future purchase of RAM that has increased in price for the company to acquire.

Add that because of RAM prices spiking, many systems builders and enthusiasts have put other purchases on hold like those of motherboards. So a bundle like this can help move other inventory more easily and SHARE the cost, allowing for a margin to be earned versus no profit of both individual items sitting in stock...

So no they might or might not be price gouging - but using basic business and accounting functions can lead you to see that it is unlikely that this is the case and they are just finding a way to spread the cost of inventory and pick up a return through bundling items that could garner interest due to perception of gained value.

For me these combos have been great because I recognize that I am not likely to get yesterdays prices anytime in the foreseeable future.

its more nuanced than that.. its not like sam altman is going around buying up 64gb RGB sticks for his data centers. the issue is the demand for silicon wafers and the global production capacity has already been spoken for for the foreseeable future. manufacturers like samsung and hynix are pivoting their production to server grade HBM memory because its more profitable, and resellers are anticipating a shortage and also capitalizing on the panic in the consumer market.
thanks to biden's chips act a few years back, the supply of low density silicon (non HBM) is somewhat mitigated so it wont affect the manufacturing sector at large. but the context is that the demand wont subside and resellers wont want less profit and we're looking at these two factors for the next few-several years. as slickdealers we just have to be more resourceful. maybe use 4 channel interleave @4x8gb to make 32, or just sacrifice a bit of speed for capacity.
its funny cos i wouldnt think twice to pay top dollar for automatic litterboxes or tech toys for my cats, but i know i'd be grumpy if i paid 2x or 3x for my ram in my pc.

The price of of ram is not going down anytime soon. Its been reported that manufacturers are mainly focusing on AI/Data centers that are popping up like dandelions.
