This is an insane price for a switch like this, for those who ordered it please do a network test and benchmark the switch to see how close to rated specs it is. Very curious how well it will perform.

Dont worry about it Teal, anyone who makes a statement like that has ZERO idea about networking and how Switches work.....

I guess you missed the whole part about this being a UNMANAGED switch. But dont worry people can make up fake what if examples on just about anything... Unless you sending viruses to yourself...

Price went up to $60. I should have bought another 2. Maybe it'll come back.

Glad the price went up because I was VERY tempted when I first read this.

My comment was in jest about this product, but the actual risk is not a joke.

"Supply Chain Attack" attacks are a real threat. Not just at the higher "firmware" level with backdoors, but deeper at the hardware level injected into the microcode/ASIC instructions.

A payload packet could activate botnet code, or open an SSH tunnel.

The critical details about China is companies are "compelled" to assist the Chinese gov. This could include pre-installing malware.

This price is attractive, sure. But no amount of custom firmware flashing or virus scanning could erase or catch malware if it's deep in the microcode.
homie, at this time in space, I'm slightly of the mind to trust China more than our own govt when it comes to spying, etc.

Slick. You might want the 8 port if there's a possibility of adding more devices in the future. I had one of these switches (not the same brand but all based on realtek) and it was rock solid for the entire year. Sadly a lightning strike or sudden power surge took it out. Ended up having to get an emergency replacement that's only 1gbps Frown so maybe add a surge protector in front if you have one!

The same people are afraid a Chinese power strip will steal their credit card numbers.
True that and its ridiculous.

They probably realized they made it too good of a deal and they burned through all their inventory currently since the price went up to $60.

Still curious to hear on performance from anyone who gets this.

Do you even know what microcode is?

You think this unmanaged switch has a processor that has microcode?

So many wanna-be security experts on the internet these days.

Wow there is a lot of hostility on this thread on cybersecurity risk! The key word I would suggest everyone focus on is risk. Is there spyware on this thing? Maybe...maybe not. I think the posters that are warning about cybersecurity risk are trying to convey that unless someone has contained the device and monitored its network traffic we don't really know. I've had lots of devices that I've acquired like these that are unmanaged try to "phone home" to China or some other country where I have blocks setup on my network. I'm not technical enough to see if that traffic was trying to join a botnet or if it was simply trying to perform a firmware update but as others mention unless I know exactly what it is trying to do it is potentially malicious behavior.

The other comparison I would make to this is that we all take risks when we buy things whether it is food, products, services, chemicals etc. It is why there are things like the nutrition label on food products, sourcing information for fresh seafood, safety data sheet (SDS) for chemicals, etc. By knowing what is in what we are buying we can make an informed decision if the product is risky to us. The cybersecurity industry is trying to get to these same requirements for IT equipment. If we had a a hardware and/or software bill-of-material for IoT and network devices it will help us all better understand the risk we are taking acquiring devices and add transparency to the vendors/manufacturers practices and subsequent reputation for their security practices. FWIW the medical/health IT industry is one of the worst for bad practices in this regard. If you knew how many "smart" medical devices used within hospitals had 15+ year old code/libraries with vulnerabilities and how easy those are to exploit you'd probably not go lol. The FDA is trying to get there with rules/standards but it is slooooooow adoption...

Why can't reputable brands sell this similarly priced? Netgear, Linksys, etc?
Two firms making profit versus one combined with paying for the reputation and extra support offered. Quality might be different as well and finally they may consider the market inflexible so they would mainly hurt profits by lowering price.
