Easy answer. Because it costs twice as much and you only get 3 more ports.

fair point.
As long as you don't end up needing more down the road.
Personally, I end up always needing more.

Depends on your client. Does your client IE computer also support more than 1gbps? If not then it's irrelevant

Because many people may never need that many?

We always buy more than needed, but most don't need to, they don't constantly add tech.

I don't need such a big switch on my bedroom TV. I have a Nintendo Switch 2, PS5 and an Intel NUC. One uplink. 5 ports is plenty. $9 is a wonderful price.

example i can give, i run ethernet from the main router to various rooms in the house that have wallplates. if you wanted to hook up multiple devices in say the living room specifically this would be a cheap way to turn that 1 ethernet plug in that room into 3 where 8 ports would just be overkill for that 1 room for sure.

I have a 5 port switch in our bedroom and did like you described.
Today, all the ports are used.

Good price, only want would be for the case to be metal instead of plastic for better passive cooling but since this is not heavy duty high wattage type of a device, it should not matter much.

has it ever been determined by a reputable source whether or not tp-link products are a security risk?

No need to trust anyone else, just trust yourself.
Do a network scan like wireshark and check your firewall. There is 0 network activity from switches like this.
