Just for the sake of clarity, 2,500 points = $25 right?

Warning: Do NOT keep a balance in PayPal. I did this for years. My account was compromised (so that say) and 1,800 got snagged. PayPal is a joke

Seems like a lot of overhead and time to get a $25 gift card.

meaning you open a PayPal debt and then start funding the account with direct deposits from your job etc. The 25 dollar was the carrot. Ive seen enough horror stories to never use a online only technology solution banking as your primary bank.
Why would anyone do that?

You have to direct deposit to Paypal for a measly $25? Why would anyone do that?

What's the catch? What do they gain from this to make it so valuable they would pay $25 to each person taking advantage of this?
If I had to guess, like Venmo (now owned by PayPal) they hope folks keep money in there long enough so those funds can be circulated around to yield back some return on their end.

Wonder what they're going to pump with $24 million in liquid cash that people will likely yoink within days. I wonder if they'll intentionally delay deposits to squeeze even more out of it.

I may be reading it differently, but I took Virtual's comment to mean PayPal flagged the account internally and held the balance, not that it was hacked.

I've had something similar happen before. I was literally trying to buy acrylic paint markers and somehow got treated like I was running an underground arms bazaar because the seller also sold novelty torch "guns." I just wanted to paint, not traffic miniature weaponry. 😭🎨
