Seriously, with these things it's not a matter of if you experience the hinge issue, but when. Keep listening to your gut and stay away.
Community Reviews
The WH-1000XM5 stands out for excellent noise cancelling and noticeably better sound than the XM4, with very soft pads and strong comfort for long listening or flights. It also works well for travel and all day wear, and the listed price is described as the lowest seen for a brand new pair. The main concern is the fragile hinge design, with repeated reports of breakage and weak warranty support. Some also find the pads shallow or the cups hot for warm ears, making this a strong sounding set with durability caveats.
Common Questions (5)
The soft over-ear pads can feel very comfortable and reduce ear fatigue, and the headphones are praised for long flights and all-day work use. A downside is that the pads are shallow for larger ears and the cups can run hot, especially if you sweat.
The XM5 generation is repeatedly described as having fragile hinges that can crack or snap, and Sony may refuse warranty coverage. The XM4 and XM6 are described as having stronger hinge designs, so the XM5 is the one to be cautious about if durability matters.
The XM5 is described as having noticeably better sound quality than the XM4, while the XM4 is still preferred by some for being louder and fitting better. If sound quality is the priority, the XM5 gets the edge; if fit or volume matters more, the XM4 may be the better pick.
This price is described as the lowest seen for a brand-new XM5, and it is also better than what some paid for open-box units. The main tradeoff is that the model's hinge durability is a known concern.
They can be used for running and sweating, and wiping the ear pads after workouts is recommended. For outdoor exercise, bone-conduction headphones are preferred by some instead, but the XM5 itself is reported to handle sweat without issue.
