Set it up with the same SSID and password as your home network so when you're in a hotel, traveling, whatever... you don't need to log in through the captive portal on every device. You just do that once and then your other devices auto-connect to the travel router. You can also tether a phone to the travel router and then all your devices share the same connection.

Some of the brands (Ubiquiti Unify) allows you to even establish a VPN to your home network and route all traffic through that.

hotels, airlines, and cruise ships often make you pay for premium wifi per device. if you connect your travel router as the 1 device, then you can extend that connection to as many other devices as you want without paying for each additional device. you also get the ability to tunnel your connection through a vpn and dns filter like adguard home if configured properly in the router (presuming the router you use supports those features).

I have Xfinity WiFi at home which allows me to use any Xfinity WiFi hotspot when traveling. Will this router allow me to connect to Xfinity WiFi hotspots???

I have one of these, I bought if off ebay for $20. Works very well the twice a year I need it. I use wireguard to vpn to my home setup.

I have been a traveling healthcare provider for 1.5 years. I bought this thing 2 weeks ago and I can't believe I went so long without one! I haven't ran into a single problem. Now I can even take a modded mini pc (Asus Chromebox) with me to create a Proxmox server at my Airbnbs.
I connected this via wifi to the landlord's wifi to create my own separate VLAN (network). There's barely any loss in speed - much better than the extenders i had been using. I now also have two ethernet ports that I can connect my hubitat and the server to. I plan to install pi hole and home assistant since I travel with smart bulbs, motion sensors, and a little surveillance cam. And now I only have to use my Tailscale VPN when I want to hide sensitive info. I'm super giddy! BRUUUUUHHH!!!

Okay, That makes sense. I couldn't figure out in this day of tethering why you would want/need this. Its was either cost savings or Security; cost saving could be huge on a cruise ship

I would not recommend this one and get the next step up, the TL-WR3002X /AX3000

I got this right before my last trip (hotels and cruise) and for the most part worked great and when out and about just used a 20,000mah battery to power it.

The reason I say get the upgraded one, is this base one is 9v/12v So you need a more dedicated power supply for it. The upgraded one is just normal USB 5v 3A. So any ole USB charger will power it just fine. Def paid for itself in 1 trip.

I also like that these models do not have antennas , So they look more innocent if you are trying to not have to pay extra for multiple wifi connections. Though as I have UNIFI at home, if they upgrade theirs more and isnt always out of stock. I will most likely pick one of those up for the ecosystem, and more so that it looks even less like any type of networking equipment in your bag.

Used one of these to host a little LAN with mini PCs and small KVM switches under my desk to play games with a co-worker instead of working. It did the job and helped us with some good times. We didn't get caught or fired so that was a plus.
