Many, many of us USED to love wyze cams, many years ago. It was free to watch your stuff ... and was great (no subscriptions) ! Then Wyze started to get greedy, and cut out lots of the "free stuff, started having security issues, and started paid subscriptions, and cut more and more features, and I fear to install new updates that cuts off more features ... it happens.
Before you buy wzye cams, just go to youtube and look at "current pro reviews and user reviews". Then read some of the 1 star reviews current on amazon or else where. Then at least you go into it with your expectations in check.
Tapo seems to be brand that doesn't really need a subscription , and has newer tech in it. Wzye or other brands have improved over the last few years, so research and enjoy the ride.

TAPO has RTSP support and other support that doesn't need TAPO app, and the detection of people, cats, cats, dogs, etc is FREE with no subsciption. 2k models and 4k models availabe ... I bought the 2k models the last week.

mostly my first post was to tell the guys to research what is available NOW, and new features ... I did and switched from wzye to tapo, it is KING of the budget market, with 2k camera's for just a couple of dollars more than 15 dollars, with no need to get subscription and fits 516gb microsd cards, and other features.
Just research before you buy. And then if you decide to buy this wyze camera after your research... go for it and enjoy it.
here is what I just bought of tapo brand:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F58T3...title&th=1 2( pack)Tapo 2K Indoor/Outdoor Wired Security Camera - Works as a Baby Monitor & Pet Camera, Person/Motion/Baby Crying Detection, 2-Way Audio, Siren, Subscription-Free SD Storage or Optional Cloud, C113 (2-Pack) 37 dollars.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F5J53...title&th=1 (2pack) Tapo 2K Indoor/Outdoor Pan/Tilt Wired Security Camera - Baby Monitoring, Person & Baby Cry Detection, 360° Motion Tracking, Night Vision, No-Subscription Local Storage or Optional Cloud, C216 (2-Pack)49 dollars.

It depends what you're using it for. I use these to watch over my saltwater reef tank and my garage. For viewing and notifications. You're talking about the company as a whole, that's fine but for this post for a $15 cam for the ease of viewing an object/s it's a no brainer

Eufy is also a decently priced option. Great features and no need for a subscription

I'm very invested in Wyze with multiple cams, spotlights, etc. and I'm moving away from them. I can't stand the constant removal of features (even for paid subscribers) bugs that literally eat SD cards or cause wiped firmware, lag and frozen apps, and the total lack of fixes for new bugs that crop up and last for over a year or more. I can't recommend them anymore at all. Also, if your internet connection drops the camera will not work- it won't record to SD or allow you to view it on the local network- internet down, all cams and devices immediately fail.
Yup , we both have similar experiences. We both loved Wyze (in beginning of the relationship) but to me it seems Wyze gave long term consumers the middle finger. Over the years, the changes Wyze made to screw with some of us. I'm done , we have given Wyze a few years to return to how they used to be. Our frustrations ... add up over months. Just a heads up for some of us that have experienced problems.

25 mins video that shows stuff topa 2k c216 can do, and advanced features, the tapo 2k c116 is about 18 dollars. Video reviews of that model too are on youtube .
video of c216 running on fire tv .

yeah, look at my links above your post, you can see what the 2k tapo c216 can do, but the c116 is also 2k but much cheaper . After you watch those videos ... you will not see any paid subscriptions needed and amazing features, even connects to my tinycampro on my fire hdtv's. Research this stuff by yourself, but just gave something to wet your appetite. I don't know much about eufy. There is a video I saw on youtube the last couple of days that rated the brands of these things and it rated TAPO towards the top and wyze towards the bottom.

I have the Wyze w/paid sub and its good for quickly loading vids for my parents house.
For my own house I use a mix of Tapo and some NVR PoE cameras.
The Tapos as everyone mentions doesn't lock stuff behind subscriptions, but the wifi quality and speed isn't as good.
Anyways, just ordered 2 more Wyze cams from this deal because if you have a paid sub you get unlimited cams in the plan so i can put it in random spots like garages or patios.

very nice post. Thanks.
here is video from Lifehacker comparing the wyze cam v4 vs the tapo c120.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEgUlqGfh3E
Lifehacker puts the 2 devices to the test ... love that guy's videos.
Lifehacker gives balanced review, but the quick responses on the tapo is great, and all without paid subscription. wifi and speed might depend on the model versions you have. Lifehacker reviews many of these cams, and uses the same test so it's easy to compare them. I'm glad I got the tapo because of the ability to use NAS/tinycampro on more devices. I guess if someone already as wzye paid subscription on all cams in their home, which you have , you are good to go any direction you go in. Obviously the non-subscription model is my choice. Thanks for your post.

i think you'll only get notifications but will not capture any videos so it'll be useless.

Have not tried but may help with some Wyze cams that are listed:
https://github.com/wltechblog/thi...installers

It might turn out not helpful for OG, but might help those with older Wyze cams.

I have lots of issues with Wyze overall but these OG cams are a step forward as far as super fast loading and simplicity. Similar form to the Blink Minis (and both force paid sub for many key features) but the Wyze app at least allows way better notification customization (like recording events w/o constant notification spamming you!), sharing, camera controls, etc. Still no methods (official or not) for RTSP or ONVIF on these OGs and they run a totally different SoC so not compatible with hacks like Wyze-docker-bridge/Thingino/wzmini/etc. I have a big box of Wyze cams as I used to like them, but for now that are sitting there until I either give them to relatives wanting super basic alerts, firmware hacks become available for ONVIF, or Wyze finally does native 3rd party intergration (which they DID finally beta release for the v3 cam (thingino is better) and v3 Pan (no firmware hacks due to secure boot), but still RTSP only no ONVIF, so its still Thingino or nothing for me)

ChristianG4966! Thanks...lots of useful info. It is nice we can get along and learn what works for us personally and where we came from, and what we are looking for in security cams. There is no right or wrong, just what works for us as individuals and what we learn and use to "help" others for security cams, and hopefully find a good sales price.
I went to your THINGINO recommendation, and bookmarked it for future browsing, has many of my security cams on it with instructions to install. Cool.

Wyze is complete trash - DO NOT BUY THIS!

Go for Tapo cameras, you can put an SD card in them and it can do everything Wyze can do and more. no hidden monthly fees, local storage, and a one time purchase of the camera and SD card. Wyze used to be good, but they started SAAS models, removed features to lock them behind paywalls, and just reducing overall video quality...
