I was hunting at the Levittown, NY Home Depot for the Ryobi 40V 20" mower that is on clearance for $165 and found this edger kit in the clearance bay for $79. It comes with a 4Ah battery & charger. I got the last one from this store, but I have to imagine that it is available at other locations, given so many other Ryobi 40V clearance deals that are around now. I have this edger and it is lightweight and works very well. Note that the following link is for reference only. Clearance is in-store only. YMMV.

I picked up 2 of these for the batteries and one battery was completely dead and won't charge. Must have been sitting for a long time

I have been experienced dead Ryobi 40v batteries just as often as alive batteries. So far, I have bought 4 tools and half came with dead batteries.
You can take them to the store to exchange (fast). Or contact the warranty which took about a month to receive a replacement.

am i better off staying away from the 40V system? doesn't sound very durable compared to my Makita never fail batteries..........ever. hmmmm.

My interpretation is that Ryobi 40v tools are expensive and the result is that they sit on the shelf for years. I have seen some Ryobi 40v tools at my Home Depot that were over three years old. I think the batteries are just dying on the shelf.
If the battery is working when you get home then it will probably continue to work.

I have many of the Ryobi 40V tools and love them. I've never had an issue with the batteries dying. In fact, I'm rather impressed with their ability to hold a charge in between uses and their maintaining their battery capacity year after year.

thanks. Depot ought to get on top of this, selling batteries that don't work gonna hurt the Ryobi name for the rest of us. have a Big Sale and dump the stuff in the fall or winter. Tractor Supply has clearance on their stuff to avoid this issue.

I have a small number of 40v Ryobi tools. I do have this edger, specifically, and I rather like it. We have ~300ft of sidewalk on our land that we maintain in our subdivision (cul-de-sac + corner lot + community walking path). I'll usually run the length of the sidewalk 3-4 times a year with this and it works well. Usually takes 2 battery charges to run the full length. The device is powerful enough to chip the sidewalk if I'm not careful. I don't have to use the pop-down wheel thing since our sidewalks are relatively flat, so I can't comment on that beyond hearing that others don't like it. But the device has been very reliable and I'm quite happy with it.

We also have a leaf blower, weed eater, chain saw, tree saw, and some dinky pressure washers (I just bought those for the cheap batteries and was told to expect dead batteries to get replaced, but both were fine).

On the topic of 40v batteries, I think we now have 5 of them and have never experienced a dud. So far, so good, after ~2.5 years in the ecosystem!

FWIW I once got a Milwaukee m18 tool and battery and by the time I went to use it (a year later) the battery was dead and wouldn't charge. I watched a YouTube on how to jump start the charging with razor blades and another battery and it worked! I would not be surprised if it's the same process for these batteries.

Read the reviews. I saw this a few months ago as a clearance deal but the reviews stopped me from buying, even at a steep discount. Not one of Ryobi's best products it seems.

Are u being serious rite now u can't compare Ryobi to Makita that's like comparing a motorcycle to a scooter the scooter will get you to the job but only to get laughed off the site
