Can someone explain to me what is the purpose of this subcompact line in the drill and driver? As an owner of the regular drill and driver I'm wondering if I'm missing something. To me these tools are slightly smaller, and also lower powered. Is Rigid trying to fill a lower price point, or do people prefer to trade down in power just to shave a few ounces (literally) or maybe 1/2 or 3/4 inch in size? With my current impact driver for example it already feels small and light.

Just wondering if I would ever actually want to step down and just own this set but I worry about giving up the power. So what is the purpose of this line? Maybe it's for pros who are using the tool all day long and want max comfort?

My opinion only, I've owned my regular drill/driver set for 10 years now. It's helped me with many beefier projects inside and outside the house. It's not about trading down for this subcompact, it's about the subcompact complementing my regular set. There are many interior tasks I've come across where my regular set is just too big and heavy to use efficiently, and the handheld li-ion screw drivers out there are not powerful enough. My subcompact fills this niche nicely. It is significantly lighter but still powerful.Again this is just my experience. Others may vary.

Interesting take. I guess I need to go hold them in hand again at the store but when I did it before I didn't really feel like it was THAT different vs the most recent regular Rigids. Of course if you are comparing the older models or the brushed models yes. I get it in terms of the subcompact impact wrenches where those are truly like 1/3 the physical size. But 85% of the size isn't huge to me

Good deal! I have their impact wrenches and love them. No complaints.

I bought this set about 4 months ago when it was at this same price point. My existing Rigid drill and driver are about 8 years old and this set is significantly lighter. I recently rebuilt a section of a wood fence and that older drill got heavy.

Hit the gym then haha

Seriously though I will go check it out just to see. I'm worried about 500 vs 800 inch pounds on the drill but maybe it is fine for normal drilling and only becomes an issue if you're using big spade bits or whatever

Every DIYer has to make the "decision" as to what line of tools (think battery universe) they are going to invest in. About 9 years ago, a huge HD deal became available and I had to bite. The Ridgid brand is kind of an outlier as HD is the only retailer selling it. I believe that this line is the best value of ALL the brands out there for the mainstream DIYer. I have a number of Milwaukee tools but let's be honest ... they are waaaay overpriced.

Buy this kit to start or wait until the BF deals in November where you can get a bunch of tools for cheap. I am up to 14 tools at the moment and cannot find a 15th that I absolutely have to have ...

Why do you think this is the best value brand? How does it compare with dewalt. Been waiting to buy one and my first decision will end up deciding which brand ecosystem I join.

It seems like you're looking for a reason not to like the tool. Plenty of fastening or drilling jobs don't require a ton of power and would benefit more from a compact size or low weight. Think of working either in a crowded cabinet. Working overhead especially for long is more comfortable with light tools.
Just because you already have similar tools doesn't make this set pointless.

No I'm not being clear. I'm not saying this is a bad set. I'm just trying to understand how it compares to what I already have. I'm not going to keep TWO sets of drills and impact drivers as a DIYer, where I'm like "oh that is just a cabinet screw, let me go get my Subcompact driver, but if I'm going out to do some longer construction screws, let me grab my regular impact driver". So I'm always trying to optimize in my head what is the BEST SINGLE SET for me to keep. I agree with you if I am convinced that the Subcompact can do every job I might need to do as a homeowner, then I am better off having that as my only set because it is smaller, lighter, cheaper and presumably uses less power so will last longer per battery. What I don't really know is, are there situations where I would then wish that I had the more powerful version (that I have now) ie if I need to sink some longer lag screws or use a hole saw or big spade bit or whatever. As I hold my current impact driver it does not feel "big" or "heavy" to my hand. So yes, smaller would be better, and lighter would be better, in a vacuum, but I don't have a sense of if I am giving up something real in terms of power and tool function that I might need some day. NOT saying this is a pointless tool or a bad tool. Just wrestling with which is the right one for me long term.

Well I think for you, maybe whatever you already have then. Since you don't mind the current ergonomics and prefer to own only one set. If I was a rigid user with a heavy duty impact or drill (whatever's their strongest big bad, maybe their 4 mode impact and the strong hammer drill) I'd be tempted to get this kit to get two extra batteries + charger for my system and the option to grab a lighter smaller tool for light duty or repetitive work. Keep in mind when you're working on a project, the impact driver usually isn't the only thing you're carrying.
I run mostly Flex tools. I started with their comparable compact set, then in some recent fire sales picked up their quick eject (high torque) impact driver with two stacked lithium batteries and a charger for $79. These aren't bulky or hard to store items, so it doesn't pose a problem to have multiple. But I like tools.
