Anyway, I did not see the screen that the employee was typing into, yet they told me that they marked it as pristine. The cash price on the website before I went into the store said $188, but for whatever reason they gave me 195 cash. I was just looking tonight on their website and the cash price is down to $155 for pristine condition. Obviously the actual price paid is a YMMV by GameStop. They did tell me that if I know the phone number of somebody who is a pro member, that they can use that to give me an additional 10% on the price of the phone.

I purchased 2 16e, one white one black
both were traded successfully to apple
here are the model numbers:
white: a3212 MD0E4LL/A
black: a3212 MD0D4LL/A
The rep was surprised, as the phones looked brand new. He even tried to ask the manager, but they said they have seen these cases before and CANNOT override the system. I even tried for a warranty replacement, but they told me to go to cricket.
Data point. Both phones were active. eSIM transferred to another iphone and another android. Both phones were WIPED clean with a factory reset. Also it was several days that the phones were first activated.
Now I don't know what to do with these phones. It would take 6 months of cricket service to even unlock these. If I had known that I wouldn't have transferred eSIM at all, since 2 months were prepaid.
Anyone know if I should try to mail them to Apple for Trade in? Would that work? Thanks.

Traded 16e + 13 in to Apple a few days ago, no issues, full price. Those were online orders.
Picked up a 16e + two 13s at a local store. That came out to $120 for the 16e and $75 each for the 13s.
Not super great nor like the earlier online prices, but still worth doing.
And noticed that prices not only vary by store, but by worker at the same store. I stopped in today to pick up something with my one leftover number, and I got a different salesperson at the same store I previously purchased from... she seemed flabbergasted with the $75 iphone 13 price -- no way that it could be that low. After I showed my receipt and she made some calls, she then sold it for $75.
Traded in the extra two 13s today at Apple -- one of the 13s today was iffy, but it worked. It kept coming back as having a visual defect w/ tradein of $75. Worker spoke to her manager and tried a few times and eventually got it to $195.
Also picked up a Neo at the same time, so one of those phones was a trade-in, not a GC. Not sure if that helped or hurt, but it at least did give her an incentive to try to get it to work so she could make a sale. For all phones I transferred the esims to another apple phone ahead of time.
Final 16e I just traded in to gamestop for cash, as I have leftover apple money already (waiting for apple tv) and nothing else there I really want now.
Option of $195 cash or a bit higher in store credit. I took the cash but also took the gamestop membership deal at the same time, so it came to a little over 187 cash + 1 year membership, which I think also provides $5/monthly in store credit per month (can't carry-over though). Figured for the $7.50 or so, might as well.
Anyway, I made out okay I think. Not as well as early people here, but I was pretty late to the party.
Or try locally and hope for the best ....name a price you are willing to pay from the start and see if they can get in the ballpark. Otherwise they may waste your time and come back with an insane number
I had one store try to charge me $256 for one. Phone was free, plan was $60... just like $200 extra for sim card and activation, and a case/screen protector. Oh, and he wanted cash too, although begrudgingly would take a cc if he had to. Slightly suspicious...
I mentioned this to a worker at a different store today, and he said the guy probably wanted to pocket the difference and 'forget' to give a receipt. I really disliked going into most of these stores. One that worked out today with an actual purchase seemed honest... every other one felt like a used car dealership mixed with some sort of semi-criminal enterprise.
When I mentioned it was cheaper online, he asked to see it. Oddly he couldn't simply
go to the cricket website himself, but he looked at the site on my phone. He saw the prices with his own eyes.
But then acted like they were fake, somehow, or that Cricket wouldn't honor their posted online deals.
I've also learned that if you get a phone at a decent price at one store, or salesperson, keep the receipt and show it w/ new store or salesperson. They can't argue that they can't waive activation fees if a co-worker already did it for you at the same exact store.

However, you make a valid point which is to retain a receipt from a previous purchase in case you have to show and prove to the salesperson how much they should actually be charging someone for the 16e during the promo so they're forced to honor the "correct price" which nips that in the bud real quick.
Shows $195.30 cash today for gamestop on website appears went back up. The PRO membership $25 1 year you will get extra $19.50 per phone so if trade more then 1 phone buy it first. Trade Limit is 3 phones per day.
