Hype is well earned, it's my favorite moto phone in ages, but it's 2 years old at this point and not slated for any more OS updates (except security updates). If you don't mind the lack of software support tho, this phone is awesome.

I have owned several Moto phones throughout the past decade. They are one of the best budget phones. Most people don't really need high end "flagship" phones for basic use.

My friend was able to plug his Samsung Galaxy phone into a monitor using USB-C. The monitor also had a keyboard and mouse connected to it. When he did this, his phone basically turned into a minicomputer with a desktop style interface that he could use normally on the big screen.
I tried to do the same thing with my Motorola Moto G Stylus from around 2022. The keyboard and mouse worked, but the monitor only showed a mirrored version of the phone screen. The display looked cropped on the sides and did not switch into any kind of desktop mode.
My question is: Is this something that only certain phones support?
Specifically, can newer Motorola phones or other Android phones fully support this desktop style experience like Samsung Galaxy does, or is this mostly a Samsung-only feature? Thanks in advance.

Android is still rolling out its Desktop Mode. You need a phone with DP Alt Mode (most still lack it) and you have to enable Desktop Mode in DevOps.

That's exclusive to Samsung phones, especially higher end phones. It's called DEX and it's pretty awesome.

DeX is really just skinning Android Desktop mode today. Old DeX was unique and even had DeX on Linux.

But today you can enable Android Desktop in Developer Options on any Android with DP Alt Mode today.
