Allows you to plug into any Ethernet or Wi-Fi and create your own separate network - aka VLAN, aka subnet.

I travel a lot and use one so my Airbnb landlords can't see my devices.

To sum it up, you use it for security and privacy while on an untrusted network. Your own hotspot using someone else's network.

It is also good for family trip that you only need to set up the wifi once at a hotel or any stop with public wifi and everybody in the family/group are connected to the same network behind firewall automatically. We used to use it on a cruise to share wifi, but it is now banned by many cruise companies.

It's to share WiFi from a cruise ship, hotel, etc across multiple clients instead of each client needing to configure/pay for its own access. Nothing to do with SIM cards.
