That's just bad advice. 16gb is more than enough for a lot of people and an extra 8gb isn't necessary for the addition price. Future proof is just bad advice because you're spending more money for something that in the future will have better tech. Spend what you need, not what you think you need.

Agreed. I have an m1 with 8gb and it's more than enough. macOS is definitely written more efficiently than windows. 16gb is plenty for an Air still.
People who need more than that will typically get the Mac Pro or Studio for actual work uses that demands it.

If you can afford it, the M5 Air with 512gb storage. There's enough of an upgrade to justify only if your budget can manage it. I was able to find an open box M4 16gb/512gb for $800 at Best Buy.

256 storage, a used model, and a one year older chip to save $200?? 256gb alone is almost a deal breaker.
One point that even my grandmother knows: before the most recent AI hype and inflation, you can buy 1TB external drive (1000GB) for $65. You don't need those much internal storage at all unless you plan to play GTA 6 level of 3A games, on a....MacBook Air?

Just bought the 15" M5 Starlight version from Costco for $200 more. Bigger screen, trackpad, hand rest and audio. Used my Paypal debit card for 5% back ($50).
Cons: sucks trying to use this on the airplane trays taking trips.

It's is just a terrible advise. Indeed it's based on everyone's usage . However AI apps are evolving 8Gb is obsolete and 16 will be in 3 years . For MBA you should get 24 g if anyone wants to keep it for 7 years . MBP with 16 Gb is enough as is superior than air . Go ahead and checkout single core , multi core benchmarks memory bandwidth etc . It's matters a lot .

It really depends on what you needed for. For browsing, office applications and basic work, the M4 will be more than enough with 256. But if you do any creative work or coding or local AI then go with the M5
Hardly... Just 3 months ago and advice would be given of m4 vs m3. Local AI with m5 will not have a real difference at this level despite better npu performance.. it simply doesn't have enough to handle larger models where a few second will impact anyone's workflow. Video export perhaps more a reason but again, if you're doing any video which demands the extra speed, you're going for something much faster with more head room.

The real deciding factor is the storage. If you need more on the go then external drives becomes annoying.

For those stating you should get a 16 GB model, they absolutely do not know what they are talking about. Get at least the second-tier unit or 32 GB. If you're planning to buy a new laptop today, you need to ensure it's futureproof. Don't waste your money buying a 16 GB laptop in 2026! It's a fool's trap!

Don't end up with 16g. Get a 24g to future proof .
And it's 1199 at 24gb with additional 2 GPU cores

AI apps are going to be server side from here until eternity for 99% of users and for anybody running local LLMs they know what they need.

Just got the macbook neo and for $500 it's all the vast majority of users will ever need, this is frankly overkill but a good price point.

Might want to update your price reference, 1tb external ssd's are double that now.

It's giving, "Nobody cares about the Air anymore, since the Neo dropped at literally HALF the price..."

Kinda shocking to see this much off in less than a month of release. Solid machine with fantastic specs at this price, however!
