That's just bad advice. 16gb is more than enough for a lot of people and an extra 8gb isn't necessary for the addition price. Future proof is just bad advice because you're spending more money for something that in the future will have better tech. Spend what you need, not what you think you need.

Agreed. I have an m1 with 8gb and it's more than enough. macOS is definitely written more efficiently than windows. 16gb is plenty for an Air still.
People who need more than that will typically get the Mac Pro or Studio for actual work uses that demands it.

If you can afford it, the M5 Air with 512gb storage. There's enough of an upgrade to justify only if your budget can manage it. I was able to find an open box M4 16gb/512gb for $800 at Best Buy.

It really depends on what you needed for. For browsing, office applications and basic work, the M4 will be more than enough with 256. But if you do any creative work or coding or local AI then go with the M5
Coding work is AI now, but unless you use local models or have a complex multi docker environment jumping for 16 to 24GB is not worth $200. 24GB is not enough juice to squeeze the local LLM itch. Either you go big with 48GB and run legit mid models or just manage your tokens and prompt contexts and use the cloud LLMs.

The M4 MBA was send $750 most of the holiday season. This laptop is not $200 better, I'd wait for a better deal.
That was with 256GB of storage. During BF, the 512GB M4 was the same price as this one

Only thing I say for this, 8gb is extremely too small if you plan to do our own machine learning system.

Biggest thing that gets me now is the memory being non removal (laptop and mini mac)

I didn't think this would go this low this soon. I bought it last week from Amazon for $1,050. Time to return and rebuy. Is it really worth buying from Costco over Amazon?

Tempting at this price, thanks for the post. I'm looking to get a laptop to use mostly for lightweight tasks around the house, so the Neo is probably a better option for me. After playing around with the Neo vs the Air in an Apple store, I did find the trackpad much nicer on the Air though, I fell like the mechanical aspect of the cheaper model is pretty loose and prone to mis-clicks.

Been looking between 15in air vs 14in pro. Mainly looking at m4 models.

Apple had the 32gb 512gb 15in m4 air for $1360 refurbished, sold out now. Though idk if I need that much memory. Plan to run a vm or 2 on it.

It looks like it is 200 better with 256GB more SSD (we know what Apple charges for more storage), new SoC with %15 better CPU and %30 better GPU along with more memory bandwidth (150 vs 120) and Gen 4 SSD. 750 M4 was also good deal in its own but so is this one.

Agree, 16/512 is plenty to run Docker and agentic LLM sessions and still have room for regular user tasks. M5 Air base model for under $1K is a pretty amazing value in that regard.

In the case you find that isn't enough, you can provision an 8GB 4vCPU VPS or buy a cheap Mini and set it up with a reverse proxy/VPN.

I would much rather have a base M5 Air + M1 Mini (32GB RAM / 750GB SSD) for the same price as an M5 Air with 24GB/1TB SSD.

for regular normal use 16GB is more than enough.

I want to say I have a 24GB m2 air, and even running xcode, with an emulator running a smaller ios app, you still aren't swapping at 24GB but you would be like 6-7GB into swap with 16GB. that said pretty small use case, and 99% of people 16GB or even something like 10-12GB is all the ram they need

This new M5 or refurbished M4 Air with half the storage (256GB) for about $760?
Check you Best Buy open box. They have them from good to excellent for $850. It just came out so they are practically new. I found a Starlight Good condition for $853.99 and and excellent Midnight for $863.99. I have the Best Buy Total Membership so these Good and Excellent Condition macs qualify for included Applecare+, the perks for buying from Bestbuy.

It's crazy how good the tech in is in these nowadays. I would argue if you are simply using this for browsing the web, docs, etc, you could likely save quite a bit of cash and get the Neo. It really doesnt make much sense to future proof these as the money saved would be better spent on just replacing the device sooner. Whatever base Air or Neo that exists 3-4 yrs from now will likely blow this away....and be cheaper. I wouldn't be surprised if these were under $800 by year's end.

I've been using my M1 Air for both coding work and hobby-ist 6K open gate video editing, and it still surprises how well it operates for a nearly 6 yr old laptop.
