Ryobi is good for drills and smaller tools for people just looking to hang pictures in their home. Their lawn tools don't really come close to ego. And I would get milwaukee or dewalt over Ryobi these days.

Ego is awesome. Yes, the batteries are expensive. But they are quality, and last a long time. I am just replacing my first battery thats having problems after owning it for ~8 years. That's a decent enough service life for me to be happy.

Also, ego just recently released their commercial powerhead multi tool in the usa. The batteries work with it too, as well as the multi head tools. The new multi head is brushless wihlth variable speed and is static output power instead of only peak rated like the current one. Ego continues to push the product line forward with development. And considering the 5 acres and a commercial property Ive used them to maintain with, I am very pleased with their performance YoY.
I believe we're all extrapolating from our own experience, and it's subjective. I am happy that it works for you, and clearly, I am still in the EGO eco system. But my experience has been different. My battery started showing issues withing 3 years and was basically unusable after 4. The mower broke, and it took two months of waiting before they "fixed" it .. it didn't work again, and then they just gave me a refurbished unit. I don't know if many people have two mowers, but 2 months is quite a long time during mowing season. So is it a good mower? Sure, when it works, it's great. But my experience has not been 8 years (more like 3) and that obviously creates a different value proposition.

How does it compare to Greenworks? Costco has a $100 discount for their mower with two batteries now.

I will happily admit the mower is the tool in Egos lineup that I dont particularly like. Mostly due to it having its drivetrain tied to the rear wheels. This means that the rear wheels dig into the ground if you push it down to pop the front wheels up and make quick pivots, a common mowing move.

As for your battery issues - perhaps you let it sit at over 80% or less than 20% charge for extended periods. That will shorten the life of almost all rechargeable batteries significantly. I do wish todays battery chargers had a "storage" switch so that it didnt have to be a manual operation. For the most part I keep mine around 40-60% charge when not in use, and use the quick charger to boost to full when I intend to use it.

My brother has this EGO and it bogs down in thick grass. I have the Greenworks 80v 21-inch 2 battery kit and it chewed through the thick grass like butter, beating the EGO in performance. I mow regularly and get an hour run time using both the 2ah and 4ah that were included in my kit. Give it a try and see for yourself - if you don't like it, Costco will accept the return.
