Can someone explain why they don't support a 17" laptop? The back wall of the backpack looks huge, and 40L is about 8L larger than a couple of backpacks from Jansport and North Face that do.

The laptop portion of the 40L is only like 2/3 of the back panel. The laptop portion of the 55L is the interior of the second bag which is also narrow.

I have the 2017 version of the 40L farpoint. Amazing pack!! It has held up great and is very comfortable. This looks like its for the prev gen. I believe the current gen moved the laptop sleeve from the side to the top (along with a few more tweaks).

Presumably because most laptops are 15.6" and smaller.

Have both, I use the farpoint more as with the hip belt and frame it supports weight much better. The Thule is better for organization and looks.

Easy to overpack a 40L. Go for one with the hip straps to balance the weight if you want that big of a bag.

The target market for 40L+osprey is one-bag travellers, who're trying to see the world without checked bags.
As such, there is a <1% chance that they would have anything bigger than a 13 inch mac. So the bag accounts for maximizing that space.
