For the graphics card your gonna pair this with, it's been proven that upto an rtx 3090 it doesn't really change the performance of the gpu. And this cpu is never gonna get paired with something that powerful. More likely something in the rtx 4060 range and it will in no way be effected by the pcie 3 speed.

Shown where? Everywhere I search says at 1080p, this cpu will limit even a 9060xt by 5-10%. A low end build is likely going to target a lower resolution like 1080p, which means its going to be more taxing on the cpu. I ended up going with a 7600x3d bundle from Microcenter when it was on sale for $300 which doesn't limit the gpu that gpu at all. Not a bad deal since woot had it for $250.

I kept debating getting this or a 5600 to upgrade my 2600. Everything I read basically said this was an OK upgrade to that, but the 5600 was better in several ways, the biggest being double the L3 cache which can make a huge difference. The PCI-e 3 vs 4 varies depending on resolution, motherboard and GPU.
I figured with the crazy memory prices and my use case, just a CPU and GPU upgrade would last me another 5 years.
I ended up keeping the same Asus AM4 motherboard, 32 gigs Gskill RAM, and found a Intel Arc B580 12gig and bumped my CPU budget to $200 and got a Ryzen 7 5800XT from Microcenter. I think this will easily last me another 5 years if not more.
I see the 5500 as a very entry level CPU to pair with an older card for a basic system. I don't see it as an upgrade CPU for any gaming system.

With the other components being so much more expensive relatively to the CPU, it almost makes no sense to cheap out here and not get a 5600 at least, yeah.

I got it for $240 from B&H Photo back in December. I figured with RAM prices going up, GPU's would go up as well.
Had an alert set here for Intel B580 and it popped up.
And I agree, going from a 2600x to a 5500 has minimal gains. Same L3 cache, lower watts on the 5500, with just slightly better performance from the Zen 3 architecture on the 5500.
I really need to see if there is any interest on my 2600x on the resale market. Even if it is only $20-30, better than it sitting in a drawer (with all the other old CPU's I have).
Same for my GTX1060 6gb GPU. Hate to just toss it if someone could use it.

It's not the memory bus per se, but rather because cards with smaller buses often skimp on VRAM.
PCIe bandwidth is mostly used for shuffling assets between VRAM and system memory. If your VRAM's just starting to overflow, a fast PCIe bus can hide it by keeping the juggling act going a bit longer. So a card like the 5060 Ti 8GB will see a huge drop going to down to 3.0, but not the 16GB.

Linus tech tips did a test comparing pcie gen 3 to gen 4 when it first came out and the differences between the two are negligible. To be frank, the bandwidth of pcie 3 is PLENTY fast for upto an rtx 3090. But the cpu is never gonna get paired with a gpu that powerful. So a gpu that doesn't demand that much bandwidth isn't really gonna get effected by something closer to the tier of gpu this cpu can be paired with. Like rtx 3070, rtx 3060 ti, rtx 4060 for example will be a good complimentary gpu for this cpu.
