This DCS356D1 kit is an improvement over Dewalt's DCS356C1 kit in a few ways. The obvious is the addition addition of the depth guide and detail sanding attachment. It also comes with three bi-metal blades instead of one. The included 2 Ah battery has LED charge level indicators that the 1.5Ah battery in the DCS356C1 kit lacks.
I own the more basic DCS356C1 kit and have been happy with it. You don't need a depth guide if you instead mark off your blades with a band of tape corresponding to your desired depth. Still, an actual depth guide would be handy to save the time of removing adhesive residue from the blades. Knock-off non-OEM guides are available online for around $15. I've never seen a separate Dewalt OEM depth guide for sale, but my guess is that it would be stupidly expensive.

I tried and hated this multitool as its not powerful enough to cut through most of the wood in my house, it just starts vibrating violently instead of the vibration going into the blade. My Makita on the other hand will catch the blade on fire before it lets my hands vibrate and will cut through anything like butter (with a very expensive - for reasons unrelated to sharpness- starlock blade).

Is there a place that consistently has bare DeWalt tools at good prices? I don't need another charger or more batteries as a weekend warrior, but need (want) this tool.

Finally decided to switch from my old dremel corded one to this. I needed a new sanding pad and blades anyways.
