This is the brushed motor version. Still not a bad price. Generally the brushless motor version is much faster and the motor lasts longer.

Agreed. It's tempting to buy this and drop a brushless system in it. But the brushless version goes on sale from time to time. Well made rig that's very fun.

These brushed motors are apparently dogshit. Look it up. Every negative review says the motors died VERY early on.

Brushed motors burning through their brushes quickly has been a thing for as long as R/C and model cars/trains/planes/etc. have used electric motors -- we're probably approaching a century now. It's just the nature of the beast given how hard the motors are pushed.

With the better quality brushed motors you can easily replace the brushes and replacements are readily available, though I have no idea if this is such a motor or not.

And yes, this is a big reason why brushless motors are so much better -- as long as they don't get too hot, they'll last until the bearings wear out. (Other reasons: more power, more efficient, no ozone or burned brush smell.)

But yeah, if you want a hobby-grade R/C car in 2026, pay a little extra and get one with a brushless motor. (And the same goes for power tools.)

I bought this last November and almost immediately converted it to brushless.

At a minimum, youll need a brushless ESC, brushless motor, and new pinion, and a new radio since the stock one is integrated with the ESC. It might be a good idea to also replace the stock piece with a proper slipper clutch or center differential. If you do, you probably need to replace the housing as well. I bought take-off parts from Jennys RC, but you can also find full metal options on aliexpress. Or, you can just run the stock clutch and housing and see how long it lasts. There are replacement plastic pinion rings available. For street driving its probably fine, but for agressive bashing, I wouldnt expect the stock clutch to last long.

But overall, Im happy with the build. Its my fourth ARRMA, but first brushless conversion.

With all the money you spent on converting to brushless, wouldn't it have simply made more sense to buy the brushless system from the start? That is, unless you acquired the brushed version at a super-low price or received it as a gift.
Not a criticism. but an honest question into your insight. I actually would consider a conversion for the experience and the higher speeds, but only it it made financial sense at the same time. As far as parts go, I know that some people already have remotes and only need to buy an additional $15 receiver as well as the brushless ESC.

No worries, its a legitimate question. I guess it all depends on how good you are at sniffing out (or waiting on) deals.

I happened to but the car for $125, but even at $140 its a good start.

I picked up a hobbywing quicrun 120 BL speed controller for around 40 bucks off aliexpress, and paired it with a Surpass Hobby 3665 motor for $22. I already have a dumboRC radio, so another Rx goes for about 7 bucks if you shop around. And a pinion is only a buck or two. The motor mount and housing was $19 from Jennys, plus shipping, but I bought other things at the same time. I also ordered nice qulity looking CNC slipper clutch and bearings for $25 on ebay. The fit and finish was much nicer than the die cast arrma slipper clutch is.

So, technically, it was about $120 in upgrades on a $125 car. So my total was around $245 for a 4s capable typhon. But in reality, I bought several motors ranging from 3660 cans to 4274 cans, several 120a speed controllers, and a 150a hobbywing in case I want to try 6s. Then lets not forget about all the different size and voltage lipos I purchased.

So in typical slickdeals fashion, I spent about 600 or 700 bucks by "saving" all this money on the car!

I own 3 of these, brushed motor versions. They are great. My boys and I take them out on the weekends and trust me, my experience has been that the motors still run strong after a year of abuse by 12 and 14 year old boys and that you'll wear out and break several other parts before the motor dies. Everything is easily replacable. Good parts availability, price, and low effort to replace most parts. We just redid all the struts and it was a few screws and nuts each.

LOL. It's a blessing to be able to spend this much in the interest of "saving". I think I might bite on this one. I've NEVER done a brushless conversion, but with a car as popular as Arrma, I'm guessing that there many videos out there detailing how to do this step by step. It'll also be a good learning process. All I've replaced so far are shocks, A-arms, bent/lost dogbones, ect, but the hardest thing I've done so far was a differential on a cheapo 1/18 PX9300 from China. So a brushless conversion is outta my pay grade right now. But I may try it in this once the engine starts to wear or I grow the cahunas to install one as I have a 3660 motor (2350kv) and ESC combo lying around. Anyway, thanks for the insight.

Knowing this makes this deal that much more attractive. A stock 20mph on brushed sounds nice, especially if it can easily be upgraded. Can the stock version handle 3S? I know that an ESC is an easy upgrade, but I'm curious.

There are even cheaper options to convert to 3s, but they come with tradeoffs or risks. Ive seen some 60a 3s capable ESC and 3650/3660 motor combos for cheap, like 30-40 dollars for the combo. Surpass and Queen hobby come to mind. You could conceivably drop that in with the stock spur/ring setup. Youd still have to swap radios, but you can pick up a no frills radio like Dumbo for 30 or 35 dollars, or some other brands on amazon for under 20. Supposedly there's a standalone spektrum receiver you can use with this transmiter, but I couldnt find it for less than 25 or 30 dollars. At that point, might as well go with a new radio.

What size pinion did you end up going with? I put a vxl in mine and having issues lol
