It's all a bit amazing -- this particular model was first introduced around 2009 and who knows how many thousands Breville has sold since then. Of course it's getting a bit long in the tooth with some of its features being a bit outdated (the heating element being the most notable) but it continues to sell well. I'm convinced the exterior design is a huge part of its appeal. I mean it just looks the part of a solid espresso machine (the pressure gauge in particular is perfectly placed on the front panel). Genius.

A little factoid from Mr. Google: The Breville Barista Express (model BES870XL) has sold over 2 million units worldwide as of late 2022. It is frequently cited as a best-selling, top-rated entry-level espresso machine, having maintained high popularity in North America for roughly 10 years.

The bambino and Bambino plus are also on sale without a built in grinder

I suggest getting the machine and grinder separately, gives you far more range and if one breaks you can keep using the other

One of those plus an Encore ESP is cheaper overall and you can use the extra to buy a tamping station and better tamp

All their machines are set to 93* C, which is a good mid point for dark and medium roast but if you are going to do light or light-med roasts you might want to play with that setting

When I was looking at Espresso machines I decided on going with the cheaper Casabrew Ultra

Yes it's a Chinese brand with a some AstroTurf but for $160 bucks the machine works for me

My FIL had the Express and it makes good coffee but is not easy to dial in and requires a lot of maintenance

I found the Ultra a good starting point and if you like it and want to up your game you can go buy a more expensive machine

But with any manual machine it will come down to technique and how much you are willing to invest in learning

I cannot recommend this unit enough. Have owned one for 2 years now and it's an incredible machine. So much so that we've already decided that, if it dies, we're buying the exact model again, regardless of price.

And FWIW, I was in the OG group of roasting beans in a popcorn machine near 20 years ago, and this machine might as well be in a coffee shop--that's how much use it gets.
So yes, absolutely buy one.

I own the semi automatic Breville Oracle Touch and I could not agree with your comment more. Despite being their most expensive consumer machine, there is a variance of about 1g-4g of coffee grinds in between shots. So if you pull 4 shots, back to back. They will taste different. So I find myself measuring and single dosing for consistency. However, that completely takes away the benefit of having a semi automatic machine. I feel like after the freshness of the beans, your grinder has the most impact on your results. Spend some money on good grinder. I have both, the encore esp and the Sette 270wi. If you are ok with single dosing, I would recommend the encore esp as an excellent entry level grinder. Yes. Entry level. It's an expensive hobby! The Breville Barista express was my first espresso machine. The Oracle touch is my 2nd. But a machine and a separate grinder to have more control, and longevity.

Fantastic machine - I've had mine for 10 years - no issues at all. I use it daily - It's a beast.
