But also remember, the old adage of "waiting if you can" no longer applies with our current economy. In the span of less than a year, we've seen component prices double, triple, or more in some cases.

Waiting for something might not be the best move. Especially if it's from a company that does NOT telegraph their upcoming releases until they deem it fit to announce. So "maybe" it has oled, "maybe" it has touchscreen -- or maybe not. There's absolutely, genuinely zero guarantee of anything.

Get what you need, when you need it.

I agree, get what you need now that will last and don't worry about the "latest and greatest"

Apple is slowly increasing prices and removing base models for sale (google Mac Mini M4)

The Ram and SSD inflation + shortage was mentioned in Apple's CEO conference call saying its raising the production costs for the future.

I don't see a deflationary period anytime soon (but thats just my own personal prediction).

Apple probably will offer higher Hz refresh rates along with a new design(s), possibly even removable SSD's (EU repairability laws). Nobody outside of Apple knows. They will have to justify the price increase(s) and a few luxury/quality of experience upgrades would be the way to go as a company to continue/increase sales.

I just ordered a M5 15" air to replace my 16" M1 Pro.

To me, the future is a complicated balance. If people don't have enough $ and prices increase too fast, sales slow down therefore discounts/sales will be steep. But if sales continue or increase after price increase(s) = no steep discounts.
I remember the Post 2008 GFC, there were steals and deals everywhere I looked. I didn't have a lot of $ at that time or I would have been snatching up everything cheap in sight. This environment feels eerily similar.

definitely buy this over a Macbook NEO
DO NOT buy this over a M5 Air base model at $950 IMHO ($850 open box at BestBuy) 16gb/512SSD worth the higher price for newer faster CPU/GPU and 512SSD
If youre a super low basic user and don't use a lot of storage this M4 is a good/decent deal. after MacOS is fully installed it usually takes up 30+GB on the 256 SSD and you only have a little over 200GB free on the SSD.

My $0.02

Incredible deal. No luck at my Costco, but if you need a new laptop, $700 will not buy a better machine than this.

I don't agree personally, but yes this should certainly be considered.
$700 YMMV B&M Costco M4 base - $759 Apple refurbished M4 base VS $850open box-$950 Best Buy M5 base (which is 512 gb ssd)
The 15" M3 16 gb ram base went to $800 at my Costco, that is to be considered as well.

Storage alone is a big deal for some people and for only $150 more + 1 more year of MacOS update (usually) it might be worth it.
At $250 its a pick'em.
Like I stated, for a basic user this M4 plenty. I've been on MacOS for 5+ years now and just my music + photos alone take up close to 80GB on my hard drive. not including all the apps I have.
For those who stream media won't need to worry much about the SSD so 256 for them should be perfectly fine.
There's little to no more room to add my TV shows and movies. With TV shows and movies I'm already in the 400GB+ (but that's just me).
If you ever get to a point where you need more SSD space, its a PITA since its either external SSD or buy a new laptop alltogether.

I would say your situation is the minority. most typical Apple users stream or have their music and videos in the cloud. Now pictures are a different story.

Why not
Because the ~$200 difference matters to me.
Amazon last Black Friday had like new ope box m4 base airs for around $500, sold out while I was checking out, point being is the price matters to me. If it didn't then I'd agree with the prior comment

Isn't there a pretty substantial difference in SSD speed between the 256 and 512 M4? To your point, it's probably not as big a deal for the demographic buying base model Airs, but use-cases change and UX matters in the long run. I think they bring up some valid considerations especially comparing to M5s.

It may be, but i'm not going to be the only one.
Its really get what you know you need. If you don't know what you need, its always nice to have more than needed when the bigger size is slightly more.
I've laid out a few scenarios for others to consider to decide for themselves.
Again, if the M5 base model was original price at $1100 then this decision is a no-brainer because its $400 more. But the M5 is also on-sale at the moment (plus you can get open box discounts) that it makes an option to get the newer model with more storage extremely appealing.

Where is the M5 on sale open box?
Thanks!

but you're willing to spend the extra $200 more now?
If it mattered that much you'd hold out for another $500 deal but you know the probability of that happening in this current technology shortage environment its extremely unlikely.
Black friday deals are once a year and are intended to be out of the ordinary. If $500 is your baseline bottom dollar you may be mistaken. That's a anomaly, not the norm.
willing to spend the extra $200 now on M4 is understandable. But not agreeing and understanding the extra $150 for the M5 upgrade seems a little unreasonable.
You don't need to defend your choice, its understandable and it works for you. What I simply stated is if anyone needs more SSD and the newer M5 model there's a heck of a deal on open box m5 for only $150 more.
Once the sale ends on M5 and its back up to $1100 then this M4 deal looks alot better.
But as it stands right now, its only $150
