We unlock mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:
The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
Three hundred sixty-five (365) days must have passed since the device's activation date.
In summary, same device available via:
Metro for $65 ... auto unlocks in 365 days, continuing the service after 1st month/initial payment not required
Total Wireless for $40 ... will never unlock unless paid for 1 whole year of service (which is not worth - better use case is to use it as wifi only or cheaper service via rebranding to tracfone etc, ymmv)

Google's AI thing that hijacks your normal search results, sometimes, straight up lies about various unlock policies. If you correct it and ask it not to give you this incorrect information anymore (which shouldn't be necessary but 🙃), it admits that it was wrong and that my information is correct. But, if you repeat the initial question, it just keeps lying. Over and over. And people keep trusting AI for actual important things that matter. So...don't trust that for unlock info FOR SURE. 😆

But this phone is snappy - not the generalized "slow" review you give it at all. And I'm saying that as someone who is using two of them, right now. It's a fantastic phone, especially for the price.
My only "complaint" is that it's so wide it's difficult on all the -itises in my small hands. But, that's kind of a tardis problem introduced with my previous upgrade to 6.5+ screens.
Also, I LOVE a dark screen and do a lot of streaming, so going from an LCD to this was ✨🕳️nice🕳️✨.
Not everyone buys their phones with the intent to resell. Some figure "by the time I need a new phone, again, will I have received [$phone's cost] worth of value out of this phone I plan to purchase?".

You're paying for the right to start the unlock clock when you pay for the first month of service at check out,vso why not start the unlock clock? If you decide you don't want the phone in a year or 18 months, it will be unlocked and you can easily sell it for more than you paid for it.
You do not have to cancel prepaid service. Just don't pay for the second month and you won't have service after the first month. Make sure that you do NOT have auto pay enabled. If you do, your payment method will automatically be charged every month. Once auto pay is disabled (if you had it turned on), you won't be charged after the first month.
edit: you won't owe them more to keep the phone. The phone is yours to keep, as soon as you get it. I confused two companies' unlock policies a bit so I'd like to clarify: Metro is the company that only requires you pay for one month and starts an unlock clock 365 days from the day you activate the phone/start service. The phone/line doesn't have to have paid service for the entire 365 days; only the purchase of your first (1) month of paid service is required.
Total requires 365 days of paid service and that 365 day clock starts from the day you activate your first day of paid service.

You have to call to rebrand. I called and moved it to another Tracfone and rebranded it in the same call.

No one knows, new unlock policy was implemented this year. We will know next year.

1) Phone use on wifi with a phone number without monthly service. Previously policy unlocked after 365.
2) Phone use on wifi without phone number (ported out) without monthly service. Previously ?? after 365.
My question is in regards to #2. Before the new policy, what whapped in scenario #2?
