OP Note: Based on earlier comments on other Brother deals, users recommend opting out of the "Refresh EZ Print Subscription smart ink & toner service" at setup because it may block the use of low-cost aftermarket toner cartridges.

I'd been wanting a duplex color laser printer...but I need to do some ink calculations...

$30 for 3,000 pages of black on eBay off-brand toner

With my current Brother inkjet:
$4 for 500 pages of black on eBay

I guess that's cost competitive and isn't 10 years old, so it'll stop jamming!

Need to find out if it has Linux drivers. I've used Brother printers for decades because they support Linux pretty well with many models, and they generally don't prohibit third party ink and toner. And they work, period.
Edit: it does have linux printer and scanner drivers.

Be aware that Brother USA has a pretty shitty return policy. They only allow returns if the printer is defective. If you bought the wrong one or you don't like the printer they won't accept it back. And YOU have to pay for return shipping. For something this size and weight that's gonna cost a lot. And there's restocking fees.

I got one last month. You can live chat them and ask for a discount code. I got $50 off IIRC.

BUT the worst part is the ship the printer in a generic one size fits all box. The printer was bouncing around in it because the printer and foam surround was smaller in all dimensions that the interior of the box. I couldn't believe it, but this is Normal for all brother refurbs. They won't return unless defective, to which I said GFY.

Kept the printer, works great. Lack of duplex scanning isn't as big a deal as I thought
