I bought one of these a few weeks ago. So far I've used it for searing steaks after sous vide, roasting chili peppers to remove their skins, and, yes, starting the charcoal for my smoker.

What is the use of this? Just to start a wood/charcoal fire for BBQ that can otherwise be achieved much easier and almost for next to nothing by using a matchbox/lighter and a tiny amount of lamp oil/kerosene?

Works great for killing weeds. Just make sure you don't light your wood fence on fire, like I did. My nextdoor neighbor was not happy 😊

The piezo lighters on these things are notorious for failing. Get the protect, cuz next year it won't light.

These are great fire starters and as a plus they don't leave traces of an accelerant!

We had a xenomorph infestation and this worked great.

I had this particular brand and eventually the knob to adjust the gas flow failed. Because the knob also doubled as the ignitor it essentially became junk. These type torches work great for starting my smoke tube for the smoker.

Spark lighters are cheap and come with extra flints. Now, true, it will mean you will have to use both hands to ignite the torch, but it is a small price to pay. Personally I was able to replace the piezo igniter in my Bernzomatic, but the next year it stopped working again and the replacement failed. I settled for a spark igniter and that's good enough for me.

I use a similar one to burn out the inside of my beehive woodenware if I buy new equipment or lose a hive, or get some probably safe used gear. It's not a total panacea but it gives me some peace of mind, and honeybees don't love the smell of fresh-sawn wood.
