Any opinions on how this compares to other thermostats like Ecobee?

How many years until this is unsupported like other Nests? I need to replace some Gen 2s

If you're in the Google smart home ecosystem, get a Nest. I personally prefer the 3rd gen version to the 4th (I have both), but the 4th gen will see much longer support, and can connect to more remote temperature sensors than the 3rd gen.

If you're in the Amazon/Alexa or Apple Homekit ecosystem, get an Ecobee (their higher-end models are available with either Alexa or Siri built in).

If you are using Home Assistant or Smart Things, and want everything fully local (no cloud), you'll probably want something like the Z-Wave Honeywell T6 Pro (my house came with one of those, and while it isn't as sexy as the others, it doesn't phone home).

If you're not planning on using any smart home platform, but still want a smart thermostat, your probably best off with an Ecobee (they are also compatible with most smart home platforms if you ever do decide you want that).

Hope that helps🙂

Why 3rd over 4th? I have 3rd now and hate having to use the Nest app to adjust my settings.

The Nest thermostats before Gen 3 were from before Google took over, and were designed for the (now long-dead) pre-Google Nest ecosystem, which is why Google cut them off as fast as they felt they could get away with.
I wouldn't buy a Gen 3 or Nest-E thermostat now, simply because the Gen 4 is out (even if the Gen 3 is much more attractive, IMHO), but I expect my Gen 3 ones to continue to see support for many years - the Gen 4 is still fairly new on the market, and the first to be completely separated from the old Nest infrastructure, so I would expect it to be supported for a long time. I'm still not a fan of the "mushroom" design, but I wouldn't worry about their support period.

It just looks nicer, feels more solidly built and less plastic-y, and doesn't have that mushroom shape that lends itself to kids grabbing onto it and tearing it out of the wall. I wouldn't buy another Gen 3 now, simply because it has been superceded, but I still prefer the design.

On a separate note, I've had my Gen 3's for quite a number of years, and have never even installed the Nest app; I've always just used Google Home for it, just like the Gen 4. I was honestly under the impression that the Nest app was deprecated a few years back, and had no idea you even could still use it.

I agree. I've had my 3rd for years with no issues and I still use the Nest app and sensors. Works perfectly and looks great.

Woot is the worst - would never buy from them ever! Avoid like the plague.
