BP oil spill. People are paying attention NOW, aren't they? *mad face*

Unless my "search" button is broken, I can't find any threads about this oil spill.

Aren't there some Loungers here from the Gulf Coast area, besides myself?

This thing is going to be bad. Really bad. Sadwalk

I grew up in Pensacola, FL and have spent my whole life on these beaches. Pensacola, Gulf Shores, Navarre, Destin ... they are beautiful. And they have already suffered so much devastation over the years from hurricanes and now they have to endure THIS?

If this goes on long enough and the oil makes it's way into the Florida Keys, that will be the end of the natural coral reef habitat. What about the dolphins and fish and turtles and birds?

Environmental disaster aside, I can't even imagine what the economic impact is going to be. Weeping

Are you serious? Huh I'm guessing you've never been to MS.

I live in MS. There are no nice beaches in MS. In fact, there's nothing nice about this state. I have been here 13 years now and go home to FL every chance I get. We also vacation in Gulf Shores, AL from time to time but would never consider a beach vacation in MS. Nono2
I didn't say the beaches were gorgeous sugar white sand beaches like Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and the Florida Peninsula, but if you live in the area, have kids, and want to take them to the beach so they can play in the sand and ocean, right now they're about the only close choice. We canceled a trip to Orange Beach due to the spill, but still wanted to take our son to the beach because he has been so excited about it. Trust me, they aren't my first choice/go to beach, but they're close enough to take my toddler to and he had a blast! Beaches open vs beaches closed, and the open beaches win, even if they aren't the nicest in the area.

BP brands to boycott include Castrol, Arco, Aral, am/pm, Amoco, and Wild Bean Cafe.
Sorry, we already had this discussion. It ain't gonna happen. Nono2

BP does not own any gas stations in the United States. They are franchised out to AMERICANS who are responsible for the contracts that go along with owning that station, regardless of how much business they do or don't do. Boycotting BP will only hurt AMERICANS not BP.

MsGal, I know you live in the area, but I always liked Biloxi Beach BEFORE the casinos were built.

Sorry, but if you think that BP just tosses up signs for free then you are wrong. Franchisees pay franchise fees to the franchiser. So BP most assuredly makes money from the BP gas stations, as well as the rest of the businesses that they have controlling interests in. FYI, here in the Baton Rouge area, every last BP station that I have seen has recently changed over to another gas company since the spill. Texaco seems to be the big winner around here. As for AMERICANS losing jobs... Why don't you come down here to the Gulf Coast were AMERICANS are losing jobs and entire ways of life due to this spill. So yes, a boycott can and will work, and it WILL affect BP's bottom line! The franchise owners will just switch to another gasoline franchise.

From what I have heard, most of what you say is true but would add that BP station owners cannot just "switch" brands. They are under contract with BP to get their fuel from them and have to either pay a fee to get out of that contract or risk a lawsuit if they just arbitrarily switch. I was told this by someone that owns a gas station here, but it is NOT a BP station so I don't know if that is accurate or not.

A boycott of BP will hurt the company ... eventually ... but the lawsuits are going to devastate them long before the boycott will. I myself, am boycotting the fuel at those stations but last weekend we did stop at a BP and buy snacks and drinks just to help out the station owner and we are suggesting that others (who choose to boycott), do the same.

No, they don't do anything for free. The gas stations owners pay for it. You are hurting your own argument.

Whatever, there will be no boycott in 99% of the country.....so good luck with your crusade

For the "Boycott BP" people out there, here are some alternate choices for you:

Exxon: the company responsible for the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989 and, more recently, one of the biggest corporate funders of the movement to tar the science of climate change. Exxon also managed to reduce the $5 billion in punitive damages awarded by an Anchorage jury for the Valdez disaster to $507.5 million; the Valdez fishermen and other victims have still not been made whole.

Texaco and Chevron (Chevron bought Texaco in 2001), Texaco is being sued by people in Ecuador for contaminating their groundwater, causing hundreds of residents to develop fatal cancers and causing other environmental damage near the Lago Agrio oilfield, where Texaco dumped oil-production waste (18.5 billion gallons into open, unlined pits) for almost 20 years.

Citgo: Wholly owned subsidiary of the state oil company of Venezuela, which is ruled by the always-entertaining (except to political opponents he has silenced) Hugo Chez. A 2009 fire at Citgo's refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas, sent toxic fumes into nearby neighborhoods for two days.

Shell: Accused of human-rights violations in Nigeria, through its collaboration with the country's former military rulers who executed activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others in 1995, committed crimes against humanity, and tortured opponents. Shell has also been accused of despoiling the Niger Delta through its oil operations there: a ruptured oil pipeline that killed 100 people in 2008; polluted drinking wells; fields and farmland poisoned by leaked oil.

If you can't see the forest for the trees on boycotting BP gas stations, you most certainly can boycott using Castrol, Aral, and shopping at AM/PM convenience stores.

I, as well as 99% of our country, don't see a reason to boycott any of their companies at all.

They don't have to give $20billion to anyone, but they did.

They are only responsible for $75million towards the clean-up, but they are footing the entire bill.

Nobody has to hire lawyers and sit through years of trials, BP is taking care of them.

BP is doing everything the right way. What more do you people want from them?
