BP oil spill. People are paying attention NOW, aren't they? *mad face*

Unless my "search" button is broken, I can't find any threads about this oil spill.
Aren't there some Loungers here from the Gulf Coast area, besides myself?
This thing is going to be bad. Really bad.
I grew up in Pensacola, FL and have spent my whole life on these beaches. Pensacola, Gulf Shores, Navarre, Destin ... they are beautiful. And they have already suffered so much devastation over the years from hurricanes and now they have to endure THIS?
If this goes on long enough and the oil makes it's way into the Florida Keys, that will be the end of the natural coral reef habitat. What about the dolphins and fish and turtles and birds?
Environmental disaster aside, I can't even imagine what the economic impact is going to be.

On a positive note, the beaches in Mississippi are still oil free, and the air doesn't reek of crude. They're also tourist free due to people being frightened away by the threat of the spill. This isn't good for the people of the Gulfport/Biloxi area which are still trying to recover from the devastation of Katrina. They needed a good season this year, and that doesn't look like it's going to happen. If you are looking for a Gulf Coast beach vacation and want to avoid the tar balls and smell, then please look at Mississippi.
On the bad side, I have a VERY close family member (keeping things vague to protect jobs) who has worked in the oil field services industry for many many years, and is an expert in deep water drilling. This person has business dealings with the company that manufactured the relief valve that failed to stop the blow out. What my family member has just learned from engineers who work for that valve company is that when BP screwed up the cement job they created so much pressure that they cracked the sea floor away from the bore hole, and have exposed the reservoir to the ocean. This means that since the beginning oil has been seeping up from the ocean floor and into the water, and this oil is totally independent of the efforts to cap the well head. These cracks would be why BP has been limiting the images and image quality of what is happening around the well head. They don't want this information out, and hope to fix the problem without the public or the government knowing about this. Why is it so important for them to keep this knowledge secret? Because it points towards liability and increases fines. How are they going to fix this? The same way they are going to fix the blow out itself... The point of the relief well and why they keep starting and stopping the drilling of it, is that they need it to be right next to the blow out. They will then send shaped charges down the casing which will then be detonated. The resulting explosion will be so hot that it will melt the surrounding rocks, sealing the blow out and the cracks in the sea floor. That's what you should expect to see.
BP has been totally disingenuous about the entire disaster down here. Their safety record around the world speaks for itself. They are not to be trusted. Boycott BP and all of their subsidiaries!
BP brands to boycott include Castrol, Arco, Aral, am/pm, Amoco, and Wild Bean Cafe.
I live in MS. There are no nice beaches in MS. In fact, there's nothing nice about this state. I have been here 13 years now and go home to FL every chance I get. We also vacation in Gulf Shores, AL from time to time but would never consider a beach vacation in MS.
